Choumacars rents four automatic SUVs in Marrakech. The Renault Arkana and the Hyundai Tucson are compact two-wheel-drive SUVs, suited to the tarmac roads of the Ourika valley, Essaouira or the Tizi n'Tichka. The Volkswagen Touareg and the Range Rover Sport are premium SUVs with all-wheel drive. Each one seats 5. With insurance included and no mileage cap, a return trip to Ouarzazate or the dunes needs no extra sums. The SUV is handed to you at Menara as you land, at our Annajam office or outside your hotel, from Gueliz to the Palmeraie, at any hour. Drivers must be 22 with a licence held for 2 years. SUV Rental Marrakech: Arkana and Tucson

For most day trips from Marrakech, an SUV is enough: the roads to the Ourika valley, Imlil, Essaouira, Ouarzazate and Aït Ben Haddou are tarmac. You get a higher driving position, more room for luggage and more comfort on rough stretches.

Renault Arkana

A compact SUV with a coupé profile, 5 seats and an automatic gearbox. A good choice for a couple or a small family switching between town and open road. See the Renault Arkana page.

Routes from Marrakech

• Ourika valley: along the Ourika road to Setti Fatma, at the foot of the waterfalls.
• Imlil and Toubkal: via Tahanaout and Asni; the road climbs to the starting point of the hikes.
• Agafay desert: south-west on the Amizmiz road; the camps are reached by short tracks, to be driven at walking pace.
• Ouarzazate and Aït Ben Haddou: on the N9 over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, a mountain road with many bends.
• Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi dunes: a trip of several days via Ouarzazate and the Dades valley; plan at least one overnight stop.
• Essaouira: west on the Essaouira road, for a day on the Atlantic coast.

Driving outside the city

Fill up before leaving Marrakech: fuel stations are further apart once you reach the mountains. Avoid driving mountain roads at night, because of animals, pedestrians and poorly lit vehicles. Speed checks are frequent as you enter villages: keep to the limits and keep your licence and the car papers within reach. In winter, check the state of the pass before setting off, as snow can close it for a few hours. On the Agafay tracks, drive slowly and never head into the sand.
