In short
Essaouira is about 175 km west of Marrakech by car, a drive of 2 hours 30 to 3 hours on a mostly straight road across the plain and the argan country. The medina, a UNESCO site, is closed to cars: park by the ramparts or the port and walk in. Leave early for a day trip, or stay one night.
Essaouira is the Atlantic escape that most visitors to Marrakech want to see: a walled port with white and blue houses, fishing boats, sea air and a long beach. It is also the easiest long drive from the city, with no mountain pass to cross. We are Choumacars, a local car rental agency in Marrakech, open 24/7, and we plan this trip with our customers every week. This guide covers the route to Essaouira step by step, the distance and driving time, the stops on the way, parking, the right car, local tips and the mistakes to avoid, then places Essaouira among the other road trips from Marrakech.
How far is Essaouira from Marrakech by car?
Essaouira is about 175 km from Marrakech by road, and the drive usually takes 2 hours 30 to 3 hours, according to Rough Guides. Rome2Rio gives about 176 km and around 2 hours 25 of pure driving.
The real time depends less on the distance than on the towns along the way. Speed limits drop at the entrance of every village, police checks are frequent, and the two-lane section after the first part of the journey has slow lorries and tractors. Count on about 3 hours with a coffee stop.

| Two-lane road across the plain | About 60 km | 45 min to 1 h | Villages, speed checks, lorries |
| Argan country to Essaouira | About 40 km | 30 to 40 min | Argan trees, cooperatives, gentle hills |
| Total | About 175 km | 2 h 30 to 3 h | Tarmac all the way |
Stage distances are approximate. Check a live map on the morning you leave, as roadworks and market days change the times.
What is the route from Marrakech to Essaouira, step by step?
The route from Marrakech to Essaouira heads west out of the city, follows a fast road for the first part, then a two-lane road across the plain and the argan country to the coast. It is signed from Marrakech, and navigation is simple. Here is the drive in order, with estimated times from the Medina.
- Leave Marrakech to the west (0 to 20 min). Follow the signs for Essaouira. Leave by 8 a.m. if you plan to return the same evening.
- Drive the fast section (20 min to 1 h 10). A wide road with little traffic. Respect the speed limits and watch for radar checks.
- Continue on the two-lane road (1 h 10 to 2 h). Local guides note that after the Chichaoua interchange the road narrows to two lanes. Be patient behind lorries and overtake only with long, clear visibility.
- Cross the argan country (2 h to 2 h 40). Argan trees line the road, and cooperatives sell argan oil. Goats climbing in the trees are a famous sight; stop only in a lay-by.
- Reach the outskirts of the town (about 2 h 40). The road descends towards the ocean. Follow the signs for the medina or the port.
- Park by the ramparts or the port (2 h 45 to 3 h). Leave the car in a guarded car park and enter the medina on foot.
What is there to see in Essaouira?
In Essaouira, the main sights are the walled medina, the fishing port, the sea ramparts known as the Skala, and the long beach south of the town. The Medina of Essaouira (formerly Mogador) has been listed by UNESCO since 2001 as a fortified seaport of the late 18th century.
- The medina: straight lanes, white houses with blue shutters, craft shops and small squares. It is much calmer than the Marrakech medina and easy to walk.
- The port: fishing boats painted blue, nets on the quay and fish auctions in the afternoon. Grilled fish stalls near the port serve the morning catch.
- The Skala: the old sea bastion with its cannons, overlooking the waves and the islands offshore.
- The beach: a wide bay to the south, popular for walks and, on windy days, with kitesurfers and windsurfers.
- Woodwork and crafts: The town is known for its thuya wood workshops, along the ramparts.
The town is windy for much of the year and cooler than Marrakech, even in summer. Bring a light jacket for the evening.

Can you visit Essaouira as a day trip from Marrakech?
Yes, you can visit Essaouira as a day trip from Marrakech if you leave early, but it makes a long day of 5 to 6 hours of driving. A night on the coast is far more relaxed, with time for the port at sunset and a calm morning in the medina.
| Plan | Leave Marrakech | Time in Essaouira | Our view |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day trip | 7 to 8 a.m. | 4 to 5 hours | Possible, tiring, drive back before dark in winter |
| One night | Morning | About 24 hours | The plan we recommend |
| Two nights or more | Any time | Beach, port, coast road | Ideal with a drive south along the coast |
For a day trip, set a turn-back time and keep to it. In winter, leave the coast by 3 p.m. to cover most of the road in daylight.
Where do you park in Essaouira?
In Essaouira, you park in the guarded car parks outside the medina walls, near the port or along the main avenues by the ramparts, then walk in. Cars cannot enter the medina lanes, and most riads are a few minutes on foot from a car park.
Attendants in high-visibility vests manage the car parks and the street spaces near the medina. Agree the arrangement when you arrive, keep small change and lock the car. Ask your riad before arriving which gate and car park are closest; some riads send someone with a handcart for your bags. If you stay outside the medina, along the beach or in the new town, hotels usually have their own parking.
Which car is right for Essaouira?
The right car for Essaouira is a comfortable compact car or saloon, easy to park near the medina and stable on the straight road across the plain. A 4×4 is not needed: the route is tarmac all the way.
| Trip | Our suggestion | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Couple, day trip | Renault Clio 5, Hyundai Accent | Light, easy to park by the ramparts |
| Family, one or two nights | Hyundai Tucson, Renault Arkana | Room for luggage, automatic gearbox |
| Coast road to Taghazout and Agadir | Hyundai Tucson, Audi A3 | Comfort on long stages |
The Renault Clio 5 is a popular choice for couples: compact, available with an automatic gearbox and easy to leave in a small space near the port. Most of our fleet is automatic, which helps in the slow traffic through the towns; compare the models on our page on automatic car rental in Marrakech.
Can you continue from Essaouira along the coast?
Yes, from the town you can continue south along the Atlantic coast to Taghazout and Agadir, a road with cliffs, empty beaches and small fishing villages. Taghazout lies about 152 km south of Essaouira, according to Wikipedia.
The coast road makes a natural loop: Marrakech to Essaouira, the coast south to Taghazout and Agadir, then the motorway back to Marrakech across the western High Atlas. Plan three to four days for this loop. Our guides to Taghazout by car and Marrakech to Agadir by car cover the next stages. Choumacars also delivers in Agadir within 24 hours, including the airport, if you prefer to start your trip on the coast.
