In short
Renting a car in Marrakech is worth it if you plan day trips to the Atlas, the Ourika Valley or the coast, or if you stay outside the Medina. It is not needed for a short stay inside the old city, where you walk. A good compromise is often to rent only for the days you leave Marrakech.
Is it worth renting a car in Marrakech? We are a rental agency, so we have an interest in the answer, and that is exactly why this guide also tells you when a car is not useful. We are Choumacars, open 24/7 in Marrakech. What follows is based on the questions our guests ask us every week: where to stay, how hard the traffic is, where to park, which trips are easy on your own, and how to get the car without wasting a morning.
When is renting a car in Marrakech worth it?
A rental car is worth it in Marrakech when you want to explore the region around the city, because the High Atlas, the Ourika Valley and the Atlantic coast are all reached by paved roads and are much easier on your own timetable. The city is the gateway to some of the finest drives in Morocco.

- The Ourika Valley: riverside villages and the waterfalls of Setti Fatma, about an hour and a half away. Read our guide on the Ourika Valley by car.
- Imlil and the Toubkal area: mountain walks and lunch with a view of North Africa’s highest summit, about 75 minutes away. See our guide on Imlil by car from Marrakech.
- The Agafay area and the Lalla Takerkoust lake: stony desert landscapes and sunsets south-west of the city.
- Essaouira and Agadir: the Atlantic coast, for a few days by the sea.
A car also makes sense if you stay in the Palmeraie, in a villa on the road to the Atlas or in a newer district far from the centre. Taxis are easy to find in Gueliz and Hivernage, much less so at night on the outskirts. And for families with children or groups of four, one car is usually more comfortable than several separate excursions.
When can you skip the car?
You can skip the car if you sleep in a riad inside the Medina and spend your days in the souks, the palaces and the gardens of the old city. The Medina of Marrakesh, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, is a maze of narrow lanes called derbs, where cars cannot enter.
A short city break of two or three days centred on Jemaa el-Fna, the Bahia Palace, the souks and the Jardin Majorelle works very well without a car. You walk inside the Medina, and for longer distances, such as the Medina to Gueliz or the Majorelle Garden, a petit taxi is often simpler. In that case, you can still rent a car for just one or two days in the middle of your stay for the trips out of town. Many of our guests do exactly that.
| Your stay | Rental car? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Riad in the Medina, city visits only | Not needed | Lanes closed to cars, sights within walking distance |
| Riad in the Medina, one or two day trips | Yes, for those days only | Delivery to a nearby car park on the morning of the trip |
| Hotel in Gueliz or Hivernage, several trips | Yes | Easy parking and quick access to the main roads |
| Villa in the Palmeraie or on the outskirts | Yes, for the whole stay | Fewer taxis, longer distances |
| Marrakech then the coast | Yes | Essaouira or Agadir by road, at your own pace |
| Arrival by night flight | Yes, from the airport | Meet and greet at Menara, no waiting for a taxi |
What is the short answer?
So, is it worth renting a car in Marrakech? Yes for travellers who want to leave the city: the Ourika Valley, Imlil and the High Atlas, the Agafay area, Essaouira or Agadir are all reached by paved roads, and a car lets you set your own timetable. It is also useful for guests staying in the Palmeraie or on the outskirts, and for families. It is less useful for a short stay inside the Medina, where cars cannot enter the narrow lanes and walking is the easiest way to get around. A good compromise is to rent only for the days you plan to leave the city. At Choumacars, the car comes to you: we deliver anywhere in Marrakech and the surrounding area, 24/7, and meet you at Menara airport. Insurance is included, mileage is unlimited, and you book in a few steps before confirming on WhatsApp.
How does a rental car compare with taxis and organised tours?
A rental car gives you more freedom than taxis or organised tours, while taxis suit short city trips and tours suit travellers who prefer not to drive at all. The three options are complementary, and many visitors combine them.
- Petit taxis: practical inside Marrakech, for example between the Medina, Gueliz and Hivernage. They do not leave the city limits.
- Organised tours: a fixed programme with a driver and a group, convenient if you do not want to drive, but with set timings and stops.
- Rental car: your own timetable, your own stops, room for your luggage, and the option to stay longer where you like.
So is it worth renting a car in Marrakech rather than booking tours? If you plan two or more trips out of the city, or if you travel as a family, a car usually gives a more relaxed experience. If you plan one short excursion and prefer not to drive, a tour may be enough.
Is it safe to drive in Marrakech?
Driving in Marrakech is safe if you stay calm and attentive, because the traffic is dense rather than dangerous. Around the Medina walls and in Gueliz, scooters filter between cars, horse-drawn calèches share the road with buses, and pedestrians cross anywhere.

Roundabouts are busy, and drivers use the horn often, mostly to signal their presence rather than to complain. Outside the city, main roads are generally in good condition, and the motorways to Agadir and Casablanca are modern. Canada’s travel advice for Morocco notes that road conditions vary with location and weather, and recommends avoiding night driving. Our advice follows the same logic: drive in daylight when you can, keep your distance and take breaks on long trips.
- Choose an automatic: stop-and-go traffic is much less tiring without a clutch. Most of our fleet is automatic; see our page on automatic car rental in Marrakech.
- Avoid rush hours around the Medina and Gueliz in the late afternoon.
- Watch your mirrors for scooters on both sides before turning.
- Give way generously at roundabouts and let impatient drivers pass.
Where do you park in Marrakech?
You park in Marrakech in the car parks near the Medina gates and in streets supervised by attendants, who usually wear high-visibility vests. Parking is easier than many visitors expect, as long as you avoid the narrow streets of the old city.
- Around the Medina: use the car parks near the main gates and squares, where attendants watch the cars day and night.
- In Gueliz and Hivernage: many streets have spaces supervised by attendants. Agree on the arrangement when you park.
- At your riad: most riads in the Medina know a car park within walking distance. Ask before you arrive.
- At hotels and villas: many have their own parking. Check when you book your accommodation.
Never leave bags, documents or phones visible inside the car, and avoid parking along red and white kerbs, which mark no-parking zones.
How do you get the car without wasting time?
The quickest way to get your car is to have it delivered or to collect it at the airport, because Choumacars works 24/7 and brings the car to you anywhere in Marrakech and the surrounding area. Here is how a typical rental works, with times given as estimates.

- Book in about 5 minutes. Choose your dates, then your car, add your name and phone number, and confirm on WhatsApp.
- Receive confirmation. We confirm availability and the meeting point on WhatsApp.
- Meet us at the agreed time. At Menara airport, which lies about 5 to 6 km south-west of the city centre, or at your hotel, riad car park or villa.
- Handover in about 15 to 20 minutes. We check your licence and passport or national ID, walk around the car with you and hand over the keys and papers.
- Drive away. Insurance is included and mileage is unlimited for the whole rental.
- Return at the agreed time and place. We meet you again to take the car back.
For the airport in particular, see our page on car rental at Marrakech airport.
Which car should you choose for Marrakech?
The right car for Marrakech depends on your plans: a small automatic for the city and nearby trips, an SUV for the mountains and families, and a premium model for comfort on long drives.
- City and short trips: the Hyundai Grand i10 or the Hyundai Accent, easy to park near the Medina.
- Families and Atlas roads: the Hyundai Tucson or the Renault Arkana, with more space and ground clearance.
- Long-distance comfort: the Audi A3 for a couple, or the Volkswagen Touareg and the Range Rover Sport for all-wheel drive.
What are the local tips before renting a car in Marrakech?
Our main local tip is to plan the days you will really leave the city and to rent for those days only, rather than leaving a car parked outside your riad for a week. Here is what our team tells guests.
- Group your trips: Ourika one day, Imlil another, the coast for two or three days.
- Leave early: mornings are cooler and the roads quieter.
- Keep the city for walking: visit the Medina on foot on the days without the car.
- Save the Choumacars number for any question during your rental.
- Bring your documents: licence held for 2 years, passport or national ID, and an International Driving Permit if your government requires it.
Which mistakes should you avoid?
The most common mistake is renting a car for a whole week while staying deep inside the Medina, then never using it. The others are just as easy to avoid.
- Trying to drive into the Medina lanes. Park outside and walk.
- Driving back from the mountains after dark. Plan your return in daylight.
- Choosing a manual gearbox if you are not used to hill starts in heavy traffic.
- Leaving valuables visible in a parked car.
- Forgetting the documents at the hotel when going out for the day.
Frequently asked questions
Is it worth renting a car in Marrakech for a short stay?
For two or three days inside the Medina, usually not: you walk in the old city and use petit taxis for longer distances. If you plan one day trip, rent a car for that day only. Choumacars delivers it to your hotel or the car park nearest your riad.
Do I need a car to visit Marrakech?
Not for the Medina. Inside the old city you walk, and petit taxis cover longer distances. A car becomes useful for day trips to the Atlas, the Ourika Valley or the coast, or if you stay on the outskirts or in the Palmeraie.
Is it hard to drive in Marrakech as a tourist?
It is busy rather than hard. Expect scooters, pedestrians and frequent horn use around the Medina and in Gueliz. Drive calmly, keep your distance and avoid rush hours. An automatic car helps a lot in stop-and-go traffic.
Can I rent a car for just one day in Marrakech?
Yes. A one-day rental is a common choice for a trip to the Ourika Valley or Imlil. Choumacars delivers the car in the morning and takes it back in the evening, anywhere in Marrakech and the surrounding area, 24/7.
Where can I park near the Medina?
Use the car parks near the main Medina gates and squares, watched by attendants. Most riads know a car park within walking distance. Never try to drive into the narrow lanes of the old city, which are closed to cars.
Can Choumacars meet me at Marrakech airport at night?
Yes. Choumacars works 24/7 and meets you at Menara airport with the car, including for late and early flights. We check your documents, walk around the car with you and hand over the keys.
What do I need to rent a car with Choumacars?
You must be at least 22, have held your driving licence for at least 2 years and show your passport or national ID. A second driver can be added on the same conditions. Insurance is included and mileage is unlimited.
Can I drive to the coast with a car rented in Marrakech?
Yes. Essaouira and Agadir are popular trips from Marrakech, and mileage is unlimited on every Choumacars rental. Tell us your route when you book so we can suggest the right car for the motorway and the coast.
