The pottery hill and the ceramics museum
Safi is known across Morocco for its pottery. The potters' quarter sits on the hill at the end of Rue des Forgerons, where a cooperative school shows each stage of production. Ksar el Bahr, the sea fortress

Driving in and around Safi
Safi is calmer to drive than Casablanca or Marrakech, but its centre has narrow streets near the medina and busy roundabouts at rush hour. Heavy lorries serve the port and the industrial zone, so leave room when overtaking on the roads out of town. On the coast road, watch for sharp bends and sand on the tarmac. Avoid driving the cliff roads at night. In the medina area, parking attendants watch the cars for a small coin; use them rather than leaving the car in a narrow lane. If you are visiting family, ask whether there is a courtyard or a garage for the car.
