Car rental insurance in Morocco: agency cover or your own?

In short

For car rental insurance in Morocco, start with the cover the agency includes, then check what your own travel insurance adds. Third-party motor insurance is compulsory in Morocco. At Choumacars in Marrakech, insurance is included in every rental, whatever the model. With any agency, ask in writing what the cover includes before booking.

Insurance is the part of a car rental that travellers read last and worry about most. You may already have travel insurance, a motor policy at home or cover linked to your bank account, and the agency may present its own. Which one applies when you drive in Morocco? We are Choumacars, a car rental agency in Marrakech, open 24/7 and rated 5/5 on Google, and we hear this question every week. This guide sets out the rules, the difference between the types of cover, the questions to ask and what to do after an incident, without jargon.

Is car rental insurance compulsory in Morocco?

Yes: every motor vehicle driven on Moroccan roads must carry third-party liability insurance, and a rental car is no exception. This obligation comes from the Moroccan Insurance Code, Law 17-99, and the sector is supervised by the ACAPS, the Moroccan insurance and social welfare supervisory authority.

When you rent, the agency is responsible for insuring its vehicle. The real question for you is therefore not “is there insurance?” but “what does this rental include, and what is left to me?”. Agencies present it in different ways: some include car rental insurance in the quote, others add it at the counter as an option. Compare offers only once you know which case you are in.

The UK government travel advice for Morocco also reminds drivers to always carry the insurance, licence and registration documents of the vehicle they drive.

What does third-party liability insurance cover?

Third-party liability insurance covers the damage the insured vehicle causes to other people: injuries to third parties and damage to their property. It is the legal minimum. It does not, by definition, cover everything that can happen to the driver or to the rental car itself, which is why agencies and insurers offer broader cover.

  • Covered by the legal minimum: damage caused to others by the use of the car.
  • Depends on the contract: damage to the rental car, theft, broken glass, assistance.
  • Usually outside motor insurance: your own medical expenses, which travel insurance covers.

This is why the details of the cover matter more than the word “insurance” on a quote. Ask the agency to describe it in plain words.

Agency cover or your own insurance: what is the difference?

The agency’s cover protects the rental car during the rental, while your own policies mainly protect you and your trip. The two are complementary rather than opposed.

The agency’s insurance

This is the cover attached to the rental car itself. It is the first one that applies if something happens on the road, and the agency handles it with its insurer in Morocco. Its main advantage is simplicity: one contact, on site, who knows the car and the local procedure.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance mainly covers you as a person: medical expenses, repatriation, cancelled or interrupted trips. Some policies add a rental car extension, with their own conditions and exclusions.

Your home motor policy

Your home policy usually covers your own car in your own country. Never assume it follows you to a rental car in Morocco: ask your insurer directly, in writing.

Cover linked to a bank account

Some banks offer travel or rental cover with certain accounts. Conditions vary a lot: read the terms, the countries covered and the claim process, which is often handled after you return home.

Type of cover What it protects Who handles a claim What to check
Agency insurance The rental car during the rental The agency, in Morocco Included or optional, what remains your responsibility
Travel insurance You and your trip Your insurer, often after the trip Medical cover, repatriation, any rental car extension
Home motor policy Usually your own car at home Your insurer Whether it applies in Morocco at all
Bank account cover Depends on the account The bank’s insurer Conditions, exclusions, countries, claim process

Does your travel insurance cover a rental car in Morocco?

Some travel insurance policies include a rental car extension and many do not, so read your policy wording before you leave. Look for three things: whether rental cars are mentioned at all, whether Morocco is in the list of covered countries, and how a claim is made.

Even when your travel insurance includes such an extension, it does not replace the agency’s cover. It comes in addition, under its own conditions, and it usually reimburses after the event rather than handling it on site.

Which questions should you ask an agency before booking?

Before booking, ask the agency five simple questions about its car rental insurance in Morocco, and get the answers in writing. A message on WhatsApp is enough, as long as you keep it.

  1. Is insurance included in the quote, or is it sold separately at pick-up?
  2. What does the cover include, and what would remain your responsibility?
  3. Does the cover apply to every driver named in the booking?
  4. Does it apply everywhere you plan to drive, such as the Atlas roads or the south?
  5. What should you do, and whom should you call, after an incident?

An agency that answers these in plain words is an agency you can reach when you need it.

Does the insurance cover every driver?

Insurance normally covers the drivers named in the rental, so every person who will drive must be declared before pick-up. Letting an undeclared friend drive is one of the most common mistakes, and it can leave the driver without cover.

At Choumacars, a second driver is accepted on the same conditions as the main driver: at least 22 years old, a licence held for at least 2 years and a passport or national ID. Mention them in your booking message so both of you are named.

Does car rental insurance apply everywhere in Morocco?

Car rental insurance in Morocco generally applies on the road network, but conditions can differ for off-road use, such as tracks and sand, so tell the agency where you plan to go. The routes most visitors take from Marrakech, to Essaouira, the Ourika valley, Imlil, Ouarzazate or Merzouga, are tarmac.

If your plans include a desert camp reached by a track, say so when you book. Dunes are usually reached with a guide or with the camp’s own vehicles, never with a rental car.

What should you do after an accident in Morocco?

After an accident in Morocco, make the area safe, call the emergency services if anyone is hurt, then call your rental agency before signing anything. The GOV.UK emergency guidance for Morocco lists 190 for the police, 177 for the gendarmerie and 150 for an ambulance or the fire service.

  1. Switch on the hazard lights and move to safety if you can.
  2. Check that nobody is hurt, and call 150 if anyone is.
  3. Call the police in town or the gendarmerie on roads outside towns if needed.
  4. Call your rental agency and describe the situation.
  5. Take photos of the scene, the vehicles, the plates and the other driver’s documents.
  6. Fill in the joint report, the “constat amiable”, which according to the GOV.UK advice both parties sign.

Do not sign a document you do not understand. Your agency can guide you by phone. At Choumacars, our team answers on the phone and on WhatsApp 24/7 and tells you the next steps for the car.

How do you compare car rental insurance in Morocco between agencies?

You compare car rental insurance in Morocco by asking every agency the same questions and comparing the written answers, not the headline offer. Two quotes can look similar while one includes insurance and the other adds it at the counter.

  • Is insurance included in the quote, or an option?
  • Which damage does it cover: to others only, or to the rental car too?
  • Is theft or broken glass covered?
  • Are all named drivers covered on the same terms?
  • Is assistance available 24/7, and on which number?

Keep each answer in writing. When the details of car rental insurance in Morocco are clear before you land, the rest of the trip is far simpler.

What documents should stay in the car?

Keep the vehicle documents, including the insurance certificate, in the car during the rental, and carry your licence and passport or national ID with you. Police and gendarmerie checks are frequent at town entrances, and the GOV.UK advice asks drivers to always have their insurance, licence and registration documents.

Never leave documents visible when you park. A closed glovebox or a pouch you take with you is enough.

What do local agents advise about insurance?

Local agents advise reading the cover before the trip, declaring every driver and photographing the car at pick-up. A few more tips from our team:

  • Save the agency’s phone and WhatsApp numbers before you drive off.
  • Do the walk-around with the agent and keep the photos until after the return.
  • Avoid mountain roads at night and in storms: prevention beats any cover.
  • Park in supervised car parks near the Medina rather than in empty streets.

What mistakes should you avoid with car rental insurance?

The most common mistakes are assuming your home policy follows you, accepting terms you have not read and letting an undeclared driver take the wheel. Avoid these too:

  1. Comparing quotes where insurance is included in one and optional in the other.
  2. Signing a joint report you do not understand.
  3. Leaving the scene of an incident without calling the agency.
  4. Driving a rental car onto tracks or sand without asking first.

Frequently asked questions

Is insurance included in a Choumacars rental?

Yes. Choumacars includes insurance in every rental, whatever the model, from the Hyundai Grand i10 to the Range Rover Sport. The quote you receive in writing on WhatsApp already covers it, and mileage is unlimited. Ask us in your message if you want details on the cover for your trip.

Is car insurance compulsory in Morocco?

Yes. Third-party liability insurance is compulsory for every motor vehicle in Morocco under the Insurance Code, Law 17-99, with the ACAPS as supervisory authority. For a rental car, the agency insures the vehicle; your task is to check what the cover includes.

Does my travel insurance cover a rental car in Morocco?

Some travel policies include a rental car extension, many do not. Read your policy wording or ask your insurer before you leave, and check that Morocco is covered. The agency’s insurance remains the cover attached to the car during the rental: with Choumacars, it is included.

Does my home car insurance work in Morocco?

Do not assume it does. A home motor policy usually covers your own car in your own country. Ask your insurer in writing whether it extends to a rental car in Morocco, and rely on the agency’s cover for the rental itself.

Does the insurance cover a second driver?

Every driver must be named in the booking. With Choumacars, a second driver is accepted on the same conditions as the main driver: at least 22 years old and a licence held for at least 2 years. Mention them in your WhatsApp message before pick-up.

What is a constat amiable?

It is the joint accident report used in Morocco. According to GOV.UK, both drivers fill it in and sign it after a crash. Take photos, call your rental agency before signing anything you do not understand, and keep a copy. Choumacars answers by phone and WhatsApp 24/7.

What number do I call after an accident in Morocco?

GOV.UK lists 190 for the police, 177 for the gendarmerie and 150 for an ambulance or the fire service. Then call your rental agency. With Choumacars, our team answers 24/7 and tells you the next steps for the car.
