In short
The minimum age to rent a car in Morocco is set by each rental agency, not by one national rule. At Choumacars in Marrakech, drivers must be at least 22 and have held their driving licence for at least 2 years, whatever the model, and there is no young driver fee. Elsewhere, ask in writing before booking.
Holding a driving licence does not mean every agency will hand you the keys. Each company in Morocco sets its own conditions on age and driving experience, and the UK government travel advice for Morocco warns that hire car companies often have strict requirements, such as a minimum driving experience and a higher minimum age. We are Choumacars, a car rental agency in Marrakech, open 24/7 and rated 5/5 on Google. This guide explains what we ask, what young drivers should check with any agency, and how to prepare a booking without surprises.
What is the minimum age to rent a car in Morocco?
There is no single minimum age for the whole country: it depends on the agency, and sometimes on the category of car. Agencies commonly ask for a minimum age in the early twenties, and some ask for more on large or premium models, or limit younger drivers to smaller cars. Always read the conditions of the agency you book with, in writing.
At Choumacars, the rule is simple and identical for the whole fleet: you must be at least 22 years old on the day of pick-up. It applies to the Hyundai Grand i10 as much as to the Range Rover Sport. We check your age on your passport or national ID at handover, before giving you the keys.
- Minimum age at Choumacars: 22.
- Applies to: every model, manual or automatic, city car or premium SUV.
- Checked on: passport or national ID, at handover.
How long must you have held your driving licence?
At Choumacars, your driving licence must have been held for at least 2 years on the day of pick-up. Age is only half of the condition: most agencies also require a minimum period since your licence was issued, because experience matters more than age on Moroccan roads.
Two examples make the rule clear:
- A 22-year-old who passed the test at 20 can rent with us.
- A 30-year-old who passed it last year cannot rent yet, even though they are well above the minimum age.
If you are close to the limit, send us a photo of the issue date on your licence on WhatsApp before booking, and we will confirm in writing.
Why does the licence date matter so much? Because the first two years of driving are when most drivers learn to anticipate. Moroccan traffic, with scooters, carriages, pedestrians and frequent roundabouts, asks for exactly that skill. The rule protects you as much as the car, and it is the same for every customer.
Is there a young driver fee at Choumacars?
No, Choumacars charges no young driver fee. Some agencies add a surcharge below a certain age, and it may only appear at the counter once your licence has been checked. With us, the conditions are the same for every driver who meets them: at least 22 years old and a licence held for at least 2 years.
In practice, a 22-year-old and a 45-year-old renting the same car for the same dates receive exactly the same quote. Insurance is included and mileage is unlimited for both.
Does the age rule change with the type of car?
At Choumacars, the age rule does not change with the type of car: the same conditions apply from the smallest city car to the premium SUVs. Other agencies may set a higher age for luxury or large models, so check model by model if you compare.
| Category | Choumacars models | Minimum age | Licence held | Young driver fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| City cars | Hyundai Grand i10, Renault Clio 5, Dacia Logan | 22 | 2 years | None |
| Saloons and compacts | Hyundai Accent, Audi A3 | 22 | 2 years | None |
| Compact SUVs | Renault Arkana, Hyundai Tucson | 22 | 2 years | None |
| Premium SUVs | Volkswagen Touareg, Range Rover Sport | 22 | 2 years | None |
Which documents does a young driver need?
A young driver needs the same documents as any other driver: a driving licence held for at least 2 years, a passport or national ID, and an International Driving Permit if the country that issued the licence requires one for Morocco.
- Your driving licence, original, held for at least 2 years.
- Your passport or national ID, original.
- Depending on your licence, an International Driving Permit. The GOV.UK page on International Driving Permits states that Morocco requires the 1968 permit for GB and Northern Ireland licence holders, and that it is issued in the UK, in certain shops offering the service. Get it before you fly.
Bring the originals to the handover: we check them before giving you the keys. Our article on the driving licence and documents to rent a car in Morocco covers each nationality case in more detail.
Can a young driver share the wheel with a second driver?
Yes, a second driver can share the wheel on the same conditions as the main driver: at least 22 years old and a licence held for at least 2 years, with a passport or national ID. Mention the second driver in your booking message so both of you are named before pick-up. There is no young driver fee for the second driver either.
Sharing the driving is a good idea on long days, such as Marrakech to Ouarzazate over the Tizi n’Tichka or a loop to the south. Swap every two hours and take breaks at the cafes along the way.
What should a young driver know about driving in Morocco?
A young driver should know that Moroccan traffic rewards patience: limits change quickly, police checks are frequent and night driving outside towns should be avoided. The general speed limits for cars are 60 km/h in built-up areas, 100 km/h on other roads and 120 km/h on motorways, according to the ITF road safety profile of Morocco.

- Seatbelts are compulsory, and hand-held phone use at the wheel is forbidden.
- Drink-driving is a serious offence: drive with zero alcohol.
- Radars are common at village entrances, where the limit drops.
- In Marrakech, scooters and pedestrians come from every side: keep space ahead.

Which car suits a young driver in Marrakech?
For a young driver in Marrakech, a small automatic is the easiest car to start with: it is easy to park in Gueliz and leaves your attention free for city traffic. The Hyundai Grand i10 is the most compact automatic in our fleet, and the Hyundai Accent and the Renault Clio 5 add space for luggage and motorway comfort. See the full range on our page about automatic car rental in Marrakech.

Are the rules different for drivers over 70?
Some agencies also set a maximum age or ask older drivers for extra documents, so check this point if you are a senior driver. The conditions Choumacars publishes are a minimum age of 22, a licence held for at least 2 years and a passport or national ID. If you are a senior driver, give your age in your first WhatsApp message and we will confirm your booking conditions in writing before you travel. The same applies to a second driver of any age.
How does the minimum age to rent a car in Morocco compare between agencies?
The minimum age to rent a car in Morocco varies from one agency to another, and the conditions around it vary even more. When you compare offers, look beyond the age itself.
- The minimum age, and whether it changes with the car category.
- The number of years since your licence was issued.
- Any young driver surcharge, and the age below which it applies.
- The conditions for a second driver.
- Whether insurance and mileage are included for young drivers as for others.
At Choumacars, the answer to all five points is the same for every driver aged 22 or more with a licence held for 2 years: same cars, no young driver fee, a second driver on the same conditions, insurance included and unlimited mileage. Keep the written answers from each agency you contact, so you can compare like with like.
How do you book as a young driver?
You book as a young driver exactly like any other customer, in four steps, and you receive the full conditions in writing before you confirm.
- Choose your pick-up and return dates.
- Pick the car that suits your plans.
- Add your name and phone number, and the pick-up place if you want delivery.
- Send the request on WhatsApp, with your age and the issue date of your licence.
Availability and rate are confirmed in writing on WhatsApp. Nothing is added at the counter.
What do local agents advise young drivers?
Local agents advise young drivers to check their licence date, start with an automatic and plan the first drive outside rush hour. A few more tips from our team:
- Take the car at your hotel rather than at the airport if you land late and feel tired.
- Do a short first drive in Gueliz before heading to the Medina ring road.
- Keep your documents together in one pouch, never visible in the parked car.
- Plan mountain days, such as Imlil or the Ourika valley, in daylight.
What mistakes should young drivers avoid?
The most common mistakes are booking without checking the licence date, assuming a quote will not change at the counter and forgetting the International Driving Permit. Avoid these too:
- Counting the 2 years from your birthday instead of from the licence issue date.
- Letting an undeclared friend drive the car.
- Choosing a large SUV for a city stay when a small car is easier to park.
- Driving the Tizi n’Tichka at night on the first day.
Renting at 22 or more with Choumacars
Once you meet the conditions, every car in the fleet is open to you, without a young driver fee. We hand the car over 24/7 at the exit of the Marrakech Menara terminal, at your hotel or riad, or at our office in Annajam. If your flight is delayed, we move the handover to your new arrival time: see our car rental at Marrakech airport. At handover, we walk around the car with you and take photos of its condition. Insurance is included and mileage is unlimited.
Frequently asked questions
Can I rent a car in Morocco at 21?
It depends on the agency, since each one sets its own minimum age. At Choumacars, the minimum age is 22 for every model, with a licence held for at least 2 years. If you are 21, ask other agencies in writing about their conditions and any young driver surcharge before you book.
Is there a young driver fee at Choumacars?
No. Choumacars charges no young driver fee. Every driver aged 22 or more with a licence held for at least 2 years rents on the same conditions, with insurance included and unlimited mileage. Your age does not change your written quote.
Is the minimum age the same for every car?
At Choumacars, yes: the same conditions apply from the Hyundai Grand i10 to the Range Rover Sport, namely at least 22 years old and a licence held for at least 2 years. Some other agencies set a higher age for premium models, so check model by model.
How long must I have held my licence?
At Choumacars, at least 2 years on the day of pick-up, counted from the issue date of your licence. If you are close to the limit, send a photo of your licence on WhatsApp before booking and we will confirm in writing.
Can a second driver be younger than the main driver?
Yes, as long as they meet the same conditions: at least 22, a licence held for at least 2 years, and a passport or national ID. Choumacars charges no young driver fee for the second driver either. Mention them in your WhatsApp message before pick-up.
Do I need an International Driving Permit to rent a car in Morocco?
It depends on where your licence was issued. GOV.UK states that GB and Northern Ireland licence holders need the 1968 International Driving Permit for Morocco, to be obtained before travelling. Choumacars also asks for a licence held for at least 2 years and a passport or national ID.
Which car do you recommend for a first rental in Morocco?
A small automatic such as the Hyundai Grand i10 or the Renault Clio 5 automatic. Both are easy to park in Gueliz and comfortable on the motorway, and an automatic leaves your attention free for Marrakech traffic. Choumacars hands them over 24/7 at the airport, your hotel or our office.
