In short
Marrakech Airport (RAK), officially Marrakech Menara, lies about 6.6 km south-west of Jemaa el-Fna. The drive to the Medina or Gueliz takes 15 to 25 minutes outside rush hour. You can reach the city by the L19 shuttle bus, by taxi or with a rental car handed over at the terminal exit.
Most visitors to Marrakech arrive and leave through the same airport, and the first hour after landing shapes the rest of the stay. We are Choumacars, a car rental agency in Marrakech open 24/7, and we meet travellers at Menara every day and every night. This guide covers the terminals, the ways into town, the drive to the main districts, the arrival and departure steps with estimated times, and the mistakes we see most often. Everything is written from the point of view of someone who lands at Menara and wants to reach a riad, a hotel or the road to the mountains without stress.
Where is Marrakech Airport and what is its official name?
The airport is officially called Marrakech Menara Airport, IATA code RAK, and it sits on the south-western edge of the city, close to the Menara gardens that gave it its name. Wikivoyage places it about 9 km from the centre of the Medina and 6.6 km from Jemaa el-Fna square.
The airport is run by the national operator, Airports of Morocco (ONDA). According to Wikipedia, it handled around 9.3 million passengers in 2024, which makes it one of the busiest airports in the country. In practice, this means queues at passport control can be long when several flights from Europe land within the same hour, especially on Friday and Sunday evenings and during school holidays.
The short distance to the city is the good news. Few major tourist cities have their airport this close to the historic centre. Once you are out of the terminal, the Medina, Gueliz, Hivernage and the Palmeraie are all within a short drive.
How many terminals does Marrakech Airport have?
Menara has two passenger terminals, T1 and T2, set side by side in one large building, so you never need a shuttle between them. Wikipedia also mentions a third terminal built on the site. Your airline and your boarding pass tell you which entrance to use on departure.

On arrival, all passengers follow the same sequence: passport control, baggage reclaim, customs, then the arrivals hall. Wikivoyage notes that both terminals have currency exchange desks and that there is a cash machine in the Terminal 2 arrivals hall. Change a little money at the airport for the first taxi, tips or a bottle of water, then use the cash machines in town for the rest of your stay.
| Step on arrival | What happens | Time (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Leaving the aircraft | Air bridge or bus to the terminal | 5 to 15 min |
| Passport control | Passport check and entry stamp | 15 to 60 min depending on the hour |
| Baggage reclaim | Belts shown on screens in the hall | 10 to 30 min |
| Customs and exit | Bags may be scanned at the exit | 5 to 10 min |
| Meeting your driver or rental agent | Arrivals hall or terminal exit | 5 min |
How do you get from Marrakech Airport to the city centre?
You get from the airport to the city centre by the L19 airport bus, by petit taxi, by a pre-arranged transfer or by driving a rental car yourself. All four options take less than half an hour to the Medina outside peak traffic, so the choice depends on luggage, arrival time and your plans for the next days.
- L19 airport bus: Wikivoyage describes a shuttle every 30 minutes or so, from early morning to late evening, which reaches the city in 15 to 20 minutes and serves both the new town and the Medina. It suits light travellers arriving in daytime.
- Petit taxi: the beige taxis wait outside the terminal and take 10 to 15 minutes to the centre. Agree on the fare before you get in, or ask for the meter.
- Transfer arranged by your riad: useful if your riad is deep inside the Medina, where cars cannot enter. A porter usually meets you at the nearest gate.
- Rental car: the right option if you plan day trips, or if you stay in the Palmeraie, Agdal or on the Ourika road, where taxis are harder to find.

How long is the drive from Marrakech Airport to the main districts?
The drive from Menara to Gueliz, Hivernage or the edge of the Medina takes 15 to 25 minutes in normal traffic, and 30 to 45 minutes to the Palmeraie. Rush hours in the late afternoon and the evenings before public holidays can double these times on the main avenues.
| Destination | Main route from the airport | Driving time (estimate) | Parking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medina (Bab Jdid, Koutoubia) | Avenue de la Menara, then Avenue Hassan II or Bab Jdid | 15 to 25 min | Guarded car parks at the gates |
| Hivernage | Avenue de la Menara, then Avenue Mohammed VI | 15 to 20 min | Hotel car parks |
| Gueliz | Avenue Mohammed VI, then Avenue Mohammed V | 20 to 25 min | Street parking with attendants |
| Agdal and Route de l’Ourika | Ring road to the south-east | 20 to 30 min | Hotel or villa parking |
| Palmeraie | Ring road to the north-east | 30 to 45 min | Hotel or villa parking |
These times are estimates for a weekday outside peak hours. Check a live map before you leave, since roadworks and events can change the traffic around Avenue Mohammed VI.
What is the step-by-step route from Marrakech Airport to the Medina by car?
The route to the Medina by car is short and simple: you leave the airport road, follow the Avenue de la Menara north-east past the Menara gardens, then enter the city towards the Koutoubia. Here it is in order, with estimated times.
- Collect the car at the terminal exit (0 min). Check the bodywork and the tyres with the agent, take photos and adjust your seat and mirrors before moving.
- Leave the airport area (0 to 5 min). Follow the signs for Marrakech Centre. The airport roundabouts are busy with taxis and coaches, so drive slowly.
- Drive along the Menara gardens (5 to 10 min). The olive groves of the Menara are on your side. Keep to the speed limits, which change often on this stretch.
- Reach the Hivernage area (10 to 15 min). Large roundabouts and police checkpoints are common. Give way to traffic already on the roundabout.
- Approach the Medina walls (15 to 20 min). Head towards Bab Jdid or the Koutoubia, depending on where your riad is.
- Park in a guarded car park (20 to 25 min). Cars cannot enter most Medina lanes. Leave the car with an attendant and continue on foot or with a porter.
How does picking up a rental car at Marrakech Airport work?
Picking up a rental car here with Choumacars works by meeting our agent at the terminal exit at your landing time, day or night. We follow your flight, so a delay simply moves the meeting time.
Bring the documents every driver needs: a driving licence held for at least 2 years, and a passport or national ID. The minimum age is 22, with no young driver supplement. Insurance is included and mileage is unlimited. A second driver can be added on the same conditions as the main driver, which helps on longer trips such as Essaouira or Ouarzazate.
The car can also come to you later if you prefer to rest first. We deliver across Marrakech and the surrounding area, and within 24 hours to Casablanca and Agadir, airports included; in Safi, we deliver in town. Many guests take a taxi to the riad on the first night and have the car delivered the next morning, when they are ready to drive.
Which car suits an arrival at Marrakech Airport?
The car that suits your arrival depends on your luggage, your group and the roads you plan to drive after the city. For a couple staying in the Medina, a small automatic is easiest to park. For a family with large suitcases or plans for the Atlas, a compact SUV gives more room.
- Couples and city stays: the Hyundai Grand i10 or the Renault Clio 5, both easy to park near the Medina gates.
- Families and long trips: the Hyundai Tucson, a two-wheel-drive SUV with an automatic gearbox and room for luggage.
- Business travellers: the Audi A3, comfortable on the motorway to Casablanca.
- Winter mountain plans: the Volkswagen Touareg or the Range Rover Sport, both with all-wheel drive.
Most of our fleet has an automatic gearbox, which helps in Marrakech traffic and on roundabouts. Compare the models on our page on automatic car rental in Marrakech, or browse our cars.
How should you plan your departure from Marrakech Airport?
Plan your departure by arriving at the terminal at least two and a half to three hours before an international flight. Security checks happen both at the terminal entrance and after check-in, and queues at passport control on departure can be long at peak times.

- Agree the return point the day before. Choumacars can collect the car at the airport, at your hotel or at another address in Marrakech.
- Leave the city early (departure minus 3 hours 30). Allow 20 to 30 minutes of driving from the Medina, more on a Friday evening.
- Hand back the car (departure minus 3 hours). Remove your belongings, check the glovebox and the boot, and take a last photo of the dashboard.
- Pass the entrance security check. Bags are scanned before you reach the check-in desks.
- Check in and drop your bags. Confirm your terminal on your boarding pass.
- Clear passport control and security.
Departing in the early morning? The roads are quiet before 6 a.m., and the drive from Gueliz can take less than 15 minutes. Still, keep a margin for the entrance queue, which forms before the first wave of European flights.
What are the local tips for arriving at Marrakech Airport?
Our main local tip is to prepare your first hour before you fly: address, gate, contact numbers and some cash. Arrivals go smoothly when nothing has to be decided in the hall. Here is what our team tells guests.
- Save your riad’s location offline. Mobile data may not work until you set up roaming or buy a local SIM.
- Carry small notes in dirhams. Porters, car park attendants and taxi drivers rarely have change for large notes.
- Ignore unsolicited help. Wikivoyage warns that some people at the airport give wrong information about the bus. Use the official signs.
- Plan for the heat. In summer, the car park in front of the terminal is very hot in the afternoon. Keep water in your hand luggage.
- Avoid driving into the Medina on the first night. Park at a gate and walk the last part, even if your map app suggests a lane.
- Read our driving advice first. Our guide on driving in Marrakech covers roundabouts, police checks and parking attendants.
Which mistakes should you avoid at Marrakech Airport?
The most common mistake here is underestimating passport control, both on arrival and on departure. Plan for the slow case and you will rarely be caught out. These are the other errors we see most often.
- Booking a tight connection to a train or a bus on the day you land.
- Arriving at the terminal one hour before an international flight. It is often not enough.
- Getting into a taxi without agreeing on the fare or asking for the meter.
- Following a map app into the Medina lanes with a car.
- Leaving the airport without checking the rental car with the agent and taking photos.
- Starting a mountain drive straight after a night flight. Sleep in Marrakech and leave the next morning in daylight, as the GOV.UK travel advice for Morocco warns that night driving is more dangerous.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Marrakech Airport from the city centre?
Marrakech Airport (Menara) is about 6.6 km from Jemaa el-Fna and about 9 km from the centre of the Medina, according to Wikivoyage. By car or taxi, allow 15 to 25 minutes to the Medina gates or to Gueliz outside rush hour, and more on busy evenings.
Is there a bus from Marrakech Airport to the Medina?
Yes. The L19 airport shuttle runs roughly every 30 minutes from early morning to late evening and reaches the city in 15 to 20 minutes, serving the new town and the Medina. Check the timetable on arrival, as hours can change with the season.
Can I rent a car directly at Marrakech Airport?
Yes. Choumacars hands cars over at the exit of the Menara terminal at your landing time, 24/7. Insurance is included, mileage is unlimited and there is no young driver supplement. You need to be at least 22, with a licence held for 2 years and a passport or national ID.
What happens if my flight to Marrakech is delayed?
Nothing changes for your booking. Choumacars follows your flight and moves the handover to your real arrival time, day or night. Give us your flight number when you book, so our agent can check the arrivals board rather than waiting at the original time.
How early should I arrive at Marrakech Airport for my flight?
For an international flight, arrive two and a half to three hours before departure. There is a security check at the terminal entrance, then check-in, passport control and a second security check. Queues are longest when several European flights leave in the same hour.
Can I drive into the Medina from Marrakech Airport?
Not to most riads. The Medina lanes are narrow and many are closed to cars. Drive to the gate nearest your riad, such as Bab Jdid or Bab Doukkala, park in a guarded car park and walk the last part with a porter if needed.
Can Choumacars collect the car at the airport when I leave?
Yes. Choumacars can collect the car at Marrakech Airport before your flight, or at your hotel or another address in Marrakech if you prefer to take a taxi. Agree the time and place the day before, and keep a margin of three hours before departure.
