In short
Marrakech to Agadir by car is a drive of roughly 250 km, almost all of it on the toll motorway that crosses the western High Atlas via Chichaoua, Imintanoute and Argana. Most drivers allow around three hours without long stops. The older national road N8 follows the same corridor but takes clearly longer.
Many of our guests combine a few days in Marrakech with a stay on the Atlantic coast, and the drive from Marrakech to Agadir is one of the most common trips we prepare. We are Choumacars, a car rental agency in Marrakech open 24/7. This guide covers the distance and driving time, the motorway route step by step, the alternative national road, starting from Menara airport, the rules on Moroccan motorways and how to decide between a day trip and a longer stay.
How far is it from Marrakech to Agadir by car?
The road distance from Marrakech to Agadir is around 250 km, depending on your starting point in each city. The motorway itself is shorter: a technical paper by Autoroutes du Maroc, the national motorway operator, gives a functional length of about 234 km from the junction with the Settat to Marrakech motorway down to Agadir (ADM paper, PIARC).
The motorway opened to traffic in 2010, as Bladi reported at the time. Before that, every trip between the two cities used the national road through the mountains. Today, the motorway is the usual choice for travellers in a rental car.
How long does the drive from Marrakech to Agadir take?
The drive takes around three hours on the motorway, without long stops and at the legal speed. Traffic when leaving Marrakech and entering Agadir, queues at the toll stations at peak times and breaks in the service areas can add 30 to 60 minutes.
Friday afternoons, the start of school holidays and the end of long weekends are the busiest moments. In summer, many families from Marrakech head to the coast, and the traffic near Agadir increases. Check the route on a map app before leaving, as roadworks can change the timing.
| Section | Length (ADM, approx.) | Time (estimate) | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marrakech bypass | About 50 km | 30 to 40 min | Ring around the west of the city, plain |
| To Chichaoua | About 33 km | 20 min | Straight road, light traffic |
| Chichaoua to Imintanoute | About 33 km | 20 min | Foothills of the High Atlas |
| Imintanoute to Argana | About 56 km | 35 to 45 min | Mountain section, viaducts, long climbs |
| Argana to Amskroud | About 46 km | 30 min | Long descents towards the Souss |
| Amskroud to Agadir | About 12 km | 10 to 20 min | Arrival, city traffic |
| Total | Around 250 km by road | Around 3 hours | Add time for breaks and peak traffic |
What is the route from Marrakech to Agadir, step by step?
The route follows the motorway west of Marrakech, then south-west across the High Atlas to the Souss plain, with signs for Agadir from the start. Here is the drive in order, with times given as estimates.

- Join the motorway west of Marrakech (0 to 20 min). From Gueliz, Hivernage or Menara airport, follow the signs for Agadir and the motorway. The bypass avoids the city centre.
- Cross the plain to Chichaoua (20 to 60 min). A long straight section through farmland. Keep a steady speed and stay in the right lane.
- Pass Imintanoute (about 1 h 20). The hills start, and the landscape turns red and rocky.
- Drive the mountain section to Argana (1 h 20 to 2 h). The most scenic part, with viaducts, cuttings and long climbs where lorries slow down. Take a break in a service area before or after.
- Descend towards Amskroud (2 h to 2 h 40). Long downhill sections: use the engine to slow down and watch your speed.
- Arrive in Agadir (about 3 h). Leave the motorway and follow the signs for your district: the seafront, the marina or the city centre.
Should you take the motorway or the national road N8?
The motorway is the better choice for most drivers, because it is faster, wider and has service areas along the way. The national road N8 follows roughly the same corridor through Chichaoua and Imintanoute, but it is a two-lane road with village centres, lorries and sharp bends in the mountains.
| Criterion | Motorway | National road N8 |
|---|---|---|
| Driving time | Around 3 hours | Clearly longer |
| Road type | Dual carriageway, toll | Two lanes, no toll |
| Services | Service areas with cafés and toilets | Roadside cafés in villages |
| Scenery | Wide views of the High Atlas | Closer to villages and daily life |
| Recommended for | First trip, families, tight schedule | Experienced drivers with time to spare |
If you are new to driving in Morocco, take the motorway for the outward trip. Keep the national road for a return with time to spare, ideally in daylight and outside weekends.
Where can you stop between Marrakech and Agadir?
You can stop in the motorway service areas between Marrakech and Agadir, which offer cafés and toilets and are spread along the route. A break every two hours is a good habit, and the mountain section is the moment to stay fresh.

- Around Chichaoua: a good first break once the Marrakech traffic is behind you.
- Before the mountain section: rest before the climbs after Imintanoute, especially in summer heat.
- After the descent: a coffee before Agadir helps you enter the city calmly, especially at rush hour.
Never stop on the hard shoulder to take photos. If the views of the High Atlas tempt you, wait for the next service area.
Can you start from Marrakech Menara airport?
Yes, starting from Marrakech Menara airport is the simplest way to drive to Agadir, because the airport sits about 5 to 6 km south-west of the city centre, close to the ring road and the motorway bypass. You avoid the Medina and the busiest districts entirely.

Choumacars meets you at Menara airport with your car, day or night, since we work 24/7. We check your licence and passport or national ID, walk around the car with you and hand over the keys. See our page on car rental at Marrakech airport for the details of the meet and greet. After a long flight, take a short break before the motorway if you feel tired: the mountain section asks for full attention.
What are the rules on Moroccan motorways?
The general speed limit on Moroccan motorways is 120 km/h, with 100 km/h on national roads outside towns and 60 km/h in built-up areas, unless signs show a lower limit (Moroccan highway code summary). Fixed speed cameras are common, and the Gendarmerie Royale carries out checks on the main roads.
- Carry your documents. Keep your licence, passport or national ID and the car’s papers in the car. The GOV.UK travel advice for Morocco asks drivers to always carry insurance, licence and registration documents.
- Stay in the right lane except to overtake. Lorries climb slowly in the mountain section.
- Respect lower limits near toll stations, junctions and roadworks.
- Watch for pedestrians and animals near the fences around villages. It is rare, but it happens.
- Avoid night driving when possible. Canada’s travel advice for Morocco recommends it, and the mountain section is more demanding in the dark.
Which car is best for the drive from Marrakech to Agadir?
Any car in our fleet can make this drive, and the right choice depends on your group, your luggage and the comfort you want on the motorway.
- Couple or solo traveller: a compact automatic such as the Renault Clio 5 or the Audi A3 is comfortable and steady on the motorway.
- Family with luggage: an SUV such as the Hyundai Tucson or the Renault Arkana gives more space and a higher driving position.
- Premium trip: the Volkswagen Touareg or the Range Rover Sport, for long-distance comfort and all-wheel drive.
Insurance is included in every rental, and mileage is unlimited, which matters on a round trip of around 500 km.
Day trip or longer stay in Agadir?
A return trip from Marrakech to Agadir in one day is possible but demanding, with around six hours at the wheel, so most travellers stay at least one or two nights on the coast. A day trip works for a beach day or a business meeting if you leave very early.

Agadir deserves time: the long sandy beach and its seafront promenade, the hill of Agadir Oufella with its view over the bay, the large Souk El Had and the surf villages north of the city. With a car, you can also continue along the coast or come back to Marrakech by another road. For ideas, read our guide to road trips from Marrakech by car.
For stays of several weeks between Marrakech, Agadir and the south, see our page on long term car rental in Marrakech. Tell us your route when you book, so we can suggest the right car.
For the return to Marrakech, the same motorway works in the other direction, with the long climb from the Souss plain towards Argana coming first. Plan to leave Agadir after breakfast, so you cross the mountains in daylight and reach Marrakech before the evening traffic. If you are flying home from Menara, keep a comfortable margin: allow at least the driving time plus an hour before you are due at the airport, so that a queue at a toll station or a slow lorry on the climbs does not put your flight at risk.
What are the local tips for driving to Agadir?
Our main local tip is to leave in the morning, so you cross the mountain section in full daylight and arrive before the evening traffic on the coast. Here is what our team tells guests before they go.

Which mistakes should you avoid on the way to Agadir?

- Speeding on the long descents towards Amskroud, where speed checks are frequent.
- Staying in the left lane after overtaking.
- Stopping on the hard shoulder for photos.
- Underestimating the return trip on a day visit.
- Forgetting the car’s papers in the hotel room when you go out for the day.
