In short
Imlil by car from Marrakech is an easy day trip on paved roads. Head south on the R203 through Tahannaout and the Moulay Brahim gorge to Asni, then turn left for the last 17 km up to the village. Allow about 75 minutes each way. A city car manages in dry weather; choose all-wheel drive in winter.
Imlil is the mountain village most of our guests want to see once they have explored the Medina. It sits in the High Atlas, at the foot of Jbel Toubkal, and it is close enough to Marrakech for a relaxed day out by car. We are Choumacars, a local rental agency in Marrakech open 24/7, and this guide brings together what we tell our customers before they set off: the route step by step, the stops worth making, the right car, parking, the rules for hiking and the mistakes to avoid on a mountain road.
Where is Imlil and why go there by car?
Imlil is a village of the High Atlas, about 1,740 metres above sea level, at the head of the Ait Mizane valley and on the edge of Toubkal National Park. It is the main starting point for treks to Jbel Toubkal, which at 4,167 metres is the highest summit in North Africa. The park itself was created in 1942 and protects the high valleys around the mountain.

Around the village you find terraced fields, walnut and apple orchards, irrigation channels and Amazigh hamlets built in stone and earth on the slopes. The air is cooler than in Marrakech, which makes the village a welcome break in spring and summer. In winter the peaks above the village are often white, and the view from the road is one of the finest in the region.
Going there by car gives you three things that a shared excursion does not. You choose your departure time, so you can arrive before the midday heat. You stop where you want, in the Moulay Brahim gorge or at a viewpoint above Asni. And you decide how long to stay: a short walk to Aroumd and lunch on a terrace, or a night in a guesthouse to start a trek the next morning.
How long is the drive from Marrakech to Imlil?
The drive from Marrakech to Imlil takes about 75 minutes in normal traffic, according to the Kasbah du Toubkal, a lodge above the village. Asni is reached after roughly 45 minutes, and the last 17 km from Asni take the rest of the time because the road climbs and winds.
Travel sites give totals between about 50 and 65 km depending on where you start in Marrakech. In practice, the time matters more than the distance: leaving the city through the southern suburbs can be slow in the morning rush, and market days in Tahannaout and Asni add a few minutes. Count on a good hour and a quarter without stops, and closer to two hours if you stop for photos and tea.
| Stage | Road | Time (estimate) | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marrakech to Tahannaout | R203, Haouz plain | 25 to 35 min | Suburbs, straight road, roundabouts |
| Tahannaout to Asni | R203, Moulay Brahim gorge | 15 to 20 min | First bends, viewpoints over the river |
| Asni to Imlil | Valley road, about 17 km | 25 to 35 min | Narrow paved road, hairpins, minibuses |
| Total Marrakech to Imlil | About 75 min | Allow up to 2 hours with stops |
What is the route from Marrakech to Imlil, step by step?
The route from Marrakech to Imlil follows one main road, the R203 towards Asni, then a single valley road up to the village, so it is hard to get lost. Here is the drive in order, with times given as estimates.

- Leave Marrakech to the south (0 min). Take the road towards Asni and Taroudant, the R203, which continues over the Tizi n’Test pass. From Gueliz or Hivernage, follow the signs for the airport area first, then for Asni.
- Cross the Haouz plain (10 to 30 min). The road runs straight between olive groves, nurseries and new housing. Watch for speed checks at the entrance of villages.
- Pass through Tahannaout (about 30 min). This market town has roundabouts, pedestrians and parked vans. Slow down and keep right.
- Drive the Moulay Brahim gorge (35 to 45 min). The road starts to wind above the river. Use the lay-bys to stop for photos rather than braking in a bend.
- Reach Asni (about 45 min). A green village in a wide valley, practical for a break, water and fruit.
- Turn left at the small roundabout after Asni. This is the valley road. It is signposted, and local taxis take it all day.
- Climb the last 17 km (45 to 75 min). The paved road follows the valley, crosses small villages and climbs through hairpins. The Toubkal massif appears ahead on clear days.
- Arrive in Imlil (about 75 min). Park at the entrance or along the main street, then continue on foot.
Which stops are worth it on the way to Imlil?
The Moulay Brahim gorge is the first stop worth making on the drive, because the road runs high above the river and the viewpoints are easy to reach. The village of Moulay Brahim itself is a place of pilgrimage, busy on Fridays and during festivals. Further on, Asni is a good place for a mint tea and fresh fruit. On the last stretch, several bends offer wide views over the valley and the terraces; pull over only where the road is wide enough for other vehicles to pass.
What is there to see in Asni on the way to Imlil?
Asni is worth a stop on the way to Imlil for its weekly Saturday souk, which Frommer’s recommends visiting early, before the tour buses arrive. Farmers from the surrounding valleys come to sell fruit, vegetables and livestock, and mules wait in rows at the edge of the market.
On other days, Asni is a quiet village in a wide green valley, with cafés, small grocery shops and fruit stalls along the main road. It is the last place with a real choice of shops before Imlil, so buy water and snacks here if you plan a walk. On a Saturday, drive slowly through the centre: carts, animals and pedestrians fill the road around the souk, and parking is easier on the edge of the village. If you cannot come on a Saturday, Tahannaout, on the same road closer to Marrakech, holds its own weekly market. For the other mountain routes south of the city, see our guide to the Atlas Mountains by car from Marrakech.
What is the road like between Asni and Imlil?
The road between Asni and Imlil is tarmacked all the way and can be driven with an ordinary car, as the Kasbah du Toubkal confirms. It is narrow in places, with tight bends, short steep climbs and a few spots where two vehicles pass slowly. Minibuses and grand taxis use it constantly, and their drivers know every bend: stay well to the right, let them overtake and never cut a blind corner.
Which car suits Imlil: city car, SUV or 4×4?
A city car is enough to reach Imlil from spring to autumn, because the road is paved from Marrakech to the village. The choice of car depends more on your group, your luggage and the season than on the road itself.
- City car (Renault Clio 5, Hyundai Grand i10, Hyundai Accent): light, easy to park in the village, and perfectly able to climb the valley road in dry weather. Ideal for a couple or a day trip with small bags.
- SUV (Hyundai Tucson, Renault Arkana): more ground clearance, a higher driving position and room for hiking bags. The Hyundai Tucson is the model we suggest most for families heading to the mountains. It is a two-wheel-drive SUV, comfortable on mountain roads in good conditions.
- All-wheel drive (Volkswagen Touareg, Range Rover Sport): the safer choice in winter, when snow or ice can cover the upper part of the road, and for tracks beyond the paved roads. See our page on 4×4 rental in Marrakech for both models.
Most of our fleet has an automatic gearbox, which makes hairpins and slow uphill traffic much less tiring. If you are not used to hill starts on a narrow road, an automatic is the most comfortable option for Imlil.
Where do you park in Imlil?
You park in Imlil at the entrance of the village or along the main street, where several parking areas are usually watched by a local attendant. The paved road ends in the village, and the tracks beyond it are for walkers and mules.
When you arrive, an attendant often shows you a space. Agree on the arrangement before you leave the car, lock it, and take your bags, documents and phone with you. On busy weekends and during holidays, arrive early: the closest spots near the centre fill up by late morning. If you are staying overnight, ask your guesthouse where its guests usually park; many have an arrangement with a nearby car park.
Can you hike to Toubkal from Imlil on your own?
No, foreign visitors climbing from Imlil to the Toubkal refuge and summit must be accompanied by a licensed mountain guide, a rule in force since 2019 according to several trekking sources and Yabiladi. Checkpoints on the trail, in Aroumd, at Sidi Chamharouch and at the refuge, check guides and passports.

For shorter walks, things are simpler. Many guests leave the car in the village and walk to the neighbouring village of Aroumd, through orchards and along the river, then come back for lunch. For any walk above the village, the safest approach is to go to the official Bureau des Guides in Imlil, explain your plans and ask about current rules. Bring your passport even for a short hike, as you may be asked for it.
| Plan | Time in Imlil | Guide needed? | Car advice |

How do you drive safely on the mountain road to Imlil?
You drive safely to Imlil by going slowly in the bends, using low gears on the way down and planning to return before nightfall. The road is not difficult, but mountain driving asks for a few habits that many visitors forget.
- Use the engine to slow down. On the way down, select a lower gear instead of riding the brakes. In an automatic, use the manual or low mode if the car has one.
- Sound your horn briefly before blind bends where the road is narrow. Local drivers do the same, and it is expected.
- Watch for stones after rain. Small rocks fall onto the road after storms, and water can cross the tarmac in the valley bottoms.
- Check the weather in winter. Snow can fall on the upper part of the road between December and March. Look at the mountain forecast the day before and ask in Asni if the sky looks uncertain.
- Return in daylight. The Canadian government’s travel advice for Morocco recommends avoiding night driving, and on this valley road bends, animals and pedestrians are much harder to see in the dark.
What are the local tips for a day trip to Imlil?
Our main local tip for Imlil is to leave Marrakech early, around 8 a.m., so you reach the village before the excursion minibuses and enjoy the clear morning light on the peaks. Here is what our team tells guests before they go.
- Bring layers. The village is much cooler than Marrakech, and the temperature drops quickly when the sun goes behind the ridges.
- Wear real walking shoes. Even the short paths around the village are stony and steep in places.
- Carry water and snacks for the walk, and keep some in the car for the drive back.
- Have lunch on a terrace in the village or in Aroumd: tagine with a view of the valley is part of the experience.
- Combine with Asni on the way back if you want a calmer stop before the Marrakech traffic.
- Keep the Ourika Valley for another day. It is reached by a different road. Read our guide on the Ourika Valley by car if you want a second mountain trip.
Which mistakes should you avoid when driving to Imlil?
The most common mistake on the way to Imlil is leaving too late and driving back down the valley in the dark. The other errors we see are easy to avoid.
- Missing the left turn after Asni and continuing towards the Tizi n’Test pass.
- Stopping in a bend to take a photo. Wait for a lay-by or a wide section.
- Trying to drive beyond the village on the mule tracks towards Aroumd. Leave the car in the village.
- Leaving bags visible in the parked car while you hike.
- Underestimating winter conditions. A sunny day in Marrakech can mean snow above Asni.
- Starting a Toubkal trek without a licensed guide. You will be turned back at the checkpoints.
