In short

Ouarzazate is about 200 km south-east of Marrakech by the N9 road over the Tizi n’Tichka pass. Driving time is around 3 hours 30 without stops, and 4 to 5 hours with breaks and photos. The road is tarmac all the way. Leave early, cross the pass in daylight and plan at least one night.

Ouarzazate is the gateway to the south of Morocco: the kasbahs, the palm groves of the Draa and the road to the dunes all start here. Getting there means crossing the High Atlas on one of the most impressive roads in the country. We are Choumacars, a car rental agency in Marrakech open 24/7, and we prepare this trip with our customers every week. This guide covers the route to Ouarzazate step by step, the Tizi n’Tichka, the stops worth making, what to see in town, where to park, the right car and the mistakes to avoid.

How far is Ouarzazate from Marrakech by car?

Ouarzazate is about 198 km from Marrakech by road, with a pure driving time of around 3 hours 24 minutes according to Rome2Rio. In real conditions, with a coffee at the pass, a few viewpoints and slow lorries on the climbs, most drivers take 4 to 5 hours.

The distance is short on paper, but the road crosses the High Atlas, so speed is limited by bends, gradients and villages. The first third across the plain and the foothills is quick. The middle third, up to the pass and down the other side, is slow. The last part, through a wide open valley towards Ouarzazate, is fast again.

Stage Distance (approx.) Time (estimate) Road
Marrakech to Ait Ourir About 35 km 35 to 45 min Plain, villages, roundabouts
Ait Ourir to Taddert About 55 km 1 h to 1 h 15 Foothills, first climbs and bends
Taddert to the Tizi n’Tichka About 20 km 30 to 40 min Steep hairpins, lorries
Tizi n’Tichka to the Ait Ben Haddou turn-off About 60 km 1 h to 1 h 15 Descent, then open valley
Turn-off to Ouarzazate About 25 to 30 km 25 to 30 min Straight road
Total About 200 km 3 h 30 without stops, 4 to 5 h with stops Tarmac all the way

What is the route from Marrakech to Ouarzazate, step by step?

The route from Marrakech to Ouarzazate follows the N9 national road all the way, south-east across the High Atlas. Navigation is simple; the challenge is pacing the drive. Here is the trip in order, with estimated times from the Medina.

  1. Leave Marrakech on the N9 (0 to 20 min). Follow the signs for Ouarzazate from the south-east of the city. Leave before 8 a.m. to cross the pass in good light.
  2. Drive through Ait Ourir (about 40 min). A busy market town at the foot of the mountains. Slow down for pedestrians and carts.
  3. Climb into the foothills (40 min to 1 h 30). The road follows river valleys with red earth villages and walnut trees. Viewpoints with small cafés line the road.
  4. Stop in Taddert (about 1 h 45). The last village before the steep section, with roadside grills and cafés. A good place for a break.
  5. Climb to the Tizi n’Tichka (about 2 h 15). A series of hairpins leads to the pass. Stay in your lane, use low gears and overtake only with long, clear visibility.
  6. Descend towards the south (2 h 15 to 3 h 15). The landscape becomes dry and mineral. A turn-off on the left leads to Telouet and its kasbah, a detour of about 40 minutes each way on a narrower road.
  7. Turn off for Ait Ben Haddou (optional, about 3 h 15). The fortified village lies a short drive from the N9. Many visitors stop here before Ouarzazate.
  8. Arrive in Ouarzazate (3 h 30 to 5 h). Follow the signs for the centre or your hotel. Check in before dark.

Is the Tizi n’Tichka road dangerous to drive?

The Tizi n’Tichka road is not dangerous for a careful driver in daylight, but it demands attention: long climbs, tight hairpins, lorries, roadworks and sometimes snow or fog. Treat it as a mountain road, not as a motorway, and it becomes a pleasant drive.

The road has been widened on several sections, which makes it easier than in the past, but works can still create single-lane passages with traffic lights or flagmen. Lorries climb slowly and descend with heavy braking; give them space. The GOV.UK travel advice for Morocco notes that mountain roads become especially hazardous in bad weather and that night driving is more dangerous because of poor lighting.

  • Use engine braking on the descent rather than riding the brakes for kilometres.
  • Do not overtake on bends or before a crest, even if a local driver does.
  • Pull over only in lay-bys or at cafés, never on the edge of a hairpin.
  • Check the weather in winter: snow can close the pass for a few hours.
  • Keep warm clothes in the car. The pass is much colder than Marrakech, even in spring.

What can you see in Ouarzazate itself?

In Ouarzazate itself, you can visit the Taourirt Kasbah, the film studios on the edge of town and the old quarter, then use the town as a base for Ait Ben Haddou, the Draa valley and the Dades. It sits at about 1,151 metres and is often called the Door of the Desert, according to Wikipedia.

  • Taourirt Kasbah: a large earthen residence in the centre, expanded by the Glaoui family in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its courtyards and painted ceilings show how the great families of the south lived.
  • Atlas Studios: founded in 1983 on the road towards Marrakech, described by Wikipedia as the largest film studio in the world by land area. Many international films have used its sets.
  • The Noor solar complex: visible from the road outside town, connected to the national grid in February 2016. It is not open as a tourist site, but the mirrors in the desert are striking from a distance.
  • The town centre: quiet, with cafés, a covered market and wide avenues that are easy to drive and park.

A full day in and around Ouarzazate is enough for most visitors. The town is calm compared with Marrakech, which makes it a restful stage on a longer road trip.

How long should you spend in Ouarzazate?

Spend at least one night in Ouarzazate, and two if you want to see Ait Ben Haddou and the town without rushing. A same-day return from Marrakech means 7 to 9 hours of mountain driving, which leaves little time on site and often forces part of the drive after dark.

Plan Nights What it allows
Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou 1 The pass, Ait Ben Haddou at sunset, the town in the morning
Ouarzazate, Telouet and the studios 2 Calmer pace, a detour to Telouet, the Taourirt Kasbah
Ouarzazate and the Draa valley 2 to 3 Palm groves and kasbahs towards Agdz and Zagora
Ouarzazate, Dades and Merzouga 4 or more The full southern loop to the dunes

If you plan to continue to the dunes, our guide to Merzouga by car from Marrakech sets out the stages after Ouarzazate.

Which car is right for the drive to Ouarzazate?

The right car for the drive to Ouarzazate is a comfortable vehicle with enough power for the climbs and room for luggage, ideally with an automatic gearbox. A 4×4 is not necessary: the N9 is tarmac all the way and well used by coaches and lorries.

  • Hyundai Tucson: a two-wheel-drive SUV with an automatic gearbox and a high driving position, at ease on the pass. See the Hyundai Tucson page.
  • Renault Arkana: a compact SUV with an automatic gearbox, comfortable for a couple or a small family.
  • Volkswagen Touareg or Range Rover Sport: all-wheel drive for winter trips or for travellers who want extra grip on the passes. See our 4×4 rental in Marrakech.
  • Renault Clio 5 or Hyundai Accent: fine for a couple travelling light, with patience on the climbs.

On a mountain road with many hairpins and slow lorries, an automatic gearbox makes the climb far less tiring. Compare the models on our page on automatic car rental in Marrakech.

Where do you park in Ouarzazate and at the kasbahs?

In Ouarzazate, park at your hotel or in the guarded car parks near the Taourirt Kasbah and the town centre. At Ait Ben Haddou and Telouet, park in the car parks of the new village and continue on foot. Attendants usually watch the cars during the day.

Parking is easier here than in Marrakech: the avenues are wide and traffic is light. Still, follow the same habits as everywhere in Morocco. Agree the arrangement with the attendant on arrival, lock the car, and leave nothing visible on the seats. Most hotels and riads in the area have their own parking, often inside the walls.

What are the local tips for driving to Ouarzazate?

Our main local tip for Ouarzazate is to leave Marrakech before 8 a.m. so that you climb the pass ahead of the lorries and arrive with time for Ait Ben Haddou in the afternoon light. Here is what our team tells guests before they go.

  • Fill up in Marrakech or Ait Ourir. Stations exist along the N9, but they are further apart in the mountains.
  • Stop at a café near the pass to rest before the descent.
  • Carry water, snacks and a warm layer. Temperatures change quickly with altitude.
  • Download offline maps. Mobile signal drops in some valleys.
  • Keep your documents within reach. Police checks are frequent at the entrance of towns.
  • Return over the pass in the morning, never late in the day, to avoid fading light on the hairpins.

Which mistakes should you avoid on the way to Ouarzazate?

The most common mistake on the way to Ouarzazate is trying to do the trip and the return in one day. The others are just as easy to avoid with a little planning.

  • Leaving Marrakech after 11 a.m. and crossing the pass in the middle of the lorry traffic.
  • Driving the hairpins after dark, especially on the way back.
  • Ignoring the winter forecast when snow is expected on the High Atlas.
  • Overtaking lorries on blind bends.
  • Following a map app onto unpaved shortcuts between the N9 and the kasbah villages.
  • Leaving luggage visible in the car while visiting a kasbah.
