In short
The Ouzoud Waterfalls are about 150 to 160 km north-east of Marrakech, a drive of around 2 hours 40 minutes each way on tarmac roads via the N8 and the Azilal road. The falls drop about 110 metres in three steps. Park in Tanaghmeilt village, walk down to the pools and return before dark.
They are among the highest falls in Morocco and one of the most popular day trips from Marrakech. Most visitors come on a group excursion, but driving yourself lets you arrive before the crowds and choose where to eat. We are Choumacars, a car rental agency in Marrakech open 24/7. This guide explains the drive to Ouzoud step by step, with estimated times, the visit on foot, parking, the right car, the mistakes we see most and the answers to the questions our customers ask before going.
Where are the Ouzoud Waterfalls and why go by car?
The falls are in the province of Azilal, in the foothills of the High Atlas, about 150 km from Marrakech and 36 km from the town of Azilal, according to Wikipedia. The water falls into the gorge of the El Abid river below the village of Tanaghmeilt.
The falls have a total height of about 110 metres and drop in three main steps, surrounded by olive trees, fig trees and old water mills. Paths lead down one side of the gorge to the pools at the bottom and back up the other side, with viewpoints at several levels.
Going by car has real advantages for this trip. Group excursions tend to arrive at the same time, late in the morning, and the viewpoints fill up. With your own car, you can leave Marrakech at 7 a.m., reach the falls before 10 a.m., walk down while the paths are quiet and stop for lunch on the way back wherever you like.
How long is the drive from Marrakech to the Ouzoud Waterfalls?
The drive from Marrakech to the falls is about 157 km and takes around 2 hours 40 minutes without stops, according to Rome2Rio. With a coffee break and slow traffic in the towns, plan about 3 hours each way.
The first part on the N8 towards Beni Mellal is a wide national road across the plain. The second part, after the turn-off towards Azilal, becomes narrower and more winding as it climbs into the hills. This is where most of the time goes, and where you need to drive with more care.
| Stage | Distance (approx.) | Time (estimate) | Road |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marrakech to the edge of the city (north-east) | About 10 km | 15 to 20 min | City traffic, ring road |
| N8 across the plain towards Beni Mellal | About 85 to 95 km | 1 h 10 to 1 h 20 | Wide national road, villages |
| Turn-off towards Azilal, then the road to Ouzoud | About 55 to 60 km | 1 h to 1 h 15 | Narrower, winding, hilly |
| Arrival at Tanaghmeilt and parking | Last few km | About 10 min | Village streets |
| Total | About 157 km | 2 h 40 without stops, 3 h with a break | Tarmac all the way |
What is the route to the Ouzoud Waterfalls, step by step?
The route to Ouzoud leaves Marrakech to the north-east on the N8 towards Beni Mellal, then turns off on the regional road signed for Azilal and Ouzoud. Signs for the falls appear well before the village. Here is the drive in order, with estimated times from the Medina.
- Leave Marrakech to the north-east (0 to 20 min). Follow the signs for Beni Mellal and Fes. From the Palmeraie, the ring road leads directly to the N8.
- Drive across the Haouz plain (20 min to 1 h 30). A straight national road through farmland and small towns. Respect the speed limits at the entrance of each village, where radar checks are common.
- Take the turn-off for Azilal and Ouzoud (about 1 h 30). Follow the signs carefully: missing this junction adds a long detour.
- Climb into the hills (1 h 30 to 2 h 30). The road narrows, with bends, gradients and occasional potholes. Slow down behind lorries and keep well to your side on blind bends.
- Follow the signs for the Cascades d’Ouzoud (about 2 h 30). The falls are signed in French; the last kilometres lead to Tanaghmeilt village.
- Park in the village (about 2 h 40). Car parks with attendants are at the top of the falls, close to the cafés and the start of the paths.
How do you visit the Ouzoud Waterfalls on foot?
You visit the falls on foot by taking the path that starts near the car parks at the top, walking down past viewpoints and cafés to the pools at the bottom, then climbing back on the other side of the gorge. Allow 2 to 3 hours for a relaxed loop.

- The top viewpoints: a few minutes from the car park, with the full view of the falls. Good for families with small children.
- The path down: steps and earth paths through olive groves, lined with small cafés and stalls. It is steep in places and slippery after rain.
- The bottom of the falls: the pools, the spray and the rainbows that form on sunny mornings. Small boats take visitors close to the falls in season.
- The other side: a path climbs back up the opposite bank with different views of the three steps of the falls.
Barbary macaques live in the trees around the falls and often come close to visitors. Watch them from a distance, keep food in closed bags and do not feed them. Local guides offer to show the way at the car park; their help is optional, as the main paths are easy to follow.
| Visit plan | Time on site | Effort | For whom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Top viewpoints only | 30 to 45 min | Easy | Young children, reduced mobility |
| Down to the pools and back | 1 h 30 to 2 h | Moderate, steep steps | Most visitors |
| Full loop on both banks with lunch | 3 h or more | Moderate | Walkers with good shoes |
Which car is right for the Ouzoud Waterfalls?
The right car for this trip is a comfortable car with an automatic gearbox and enough room for your group. A 4×4 is not necessary, because the road is tarmac all the way to Tanaghmeilt. Comfort matters more than power on the winding second half.
- Renault Arkana: a compact SUV with an automatic gearbox, comfortable for four adults on the long road. See the Renault Arkana page.
- Hyundai Tucson: more space for a family and a higher driving position on the bends.
- Renault Clio 5 or Hyundai Accent: fine for a couple, easy to park in the village.
On the winding section after the turn-off, an automatic gearbox makes the drive more relaxed, especially behind slow lorries on the climbs. Compare the models on our page on automatic car rental in Marrakech.
Where do you park at the Ouzoud Waterfalls?
You park in the car parks at the top of the falls in Tanaghmeilt, close to the cafés and the start of the paths. Attendants direct cars to a space and keep an eye on them during the day.
Agree the arrangement with the attendant when you arrive, lock the car and leave nothing visible on the seats. At weekends and on public holidays, the car parks closest to the falls fill up by late morning; arrive early or accept a short walk from a car park further from the top.
When is the right time to visit the Ouzoud Waterfalls?
The right time to visit is spring, when the flow is strongest and the landscape is green, and early in the morning in any season, before the excursion groups arrive. The falls flow all year, but the volume changes with the rain.
- Spring (March to May): strong flow, green olive groves, mild temperatures.
- Summer (June to September): hot on the paths, lower flow, busy at weekends. Leave Marrakech very early.
- Autumn (October and November): quieter, with soft light. Flow depends on the first rains.
- Winter (December to February): fresh, few visitors, short days. Watch the time on the way back.
Is it better to drive yourself or join an excursion to the Ouzoud Waterfalls?
Driving yourself is better if you want to arrive early, set your own pace and stop where you like, while a group excursion suits travellers who do not want to drive for nearly 6 hours in a day. The visit on site is the same either way.
- Timing: excursions usually reach the falls in late morning with other groups. With a car, you can be on the paths before 10 a.m.
- Stops: a car lets you stop for a coffee in a market town, a photo of the hills or a late lunch on the way home.
- Group size: for a family or four friends, one car is often simpler than four seats on a minibus.
- Effort: the return drive comes after a walk with steep steps. Two drivers sharing the wheel make a real difference.
If this is your first long drive in Morocco, try a shorter trip first, such as the Ourika Valley, to get used to the roads and the driving habits before the hill road to Ouzoud.
What are the local tips for a day at the Ouzoud Waterfalls?
Our main local tip is to leave Marrakech by 7 a.m. and start the walk down before 10 a.m., then have lunch at a café by the pools while the groups arrive. Here is what our team tells guests before they go.

- Fill up before leaving Marrakech or on the N8. Stations are fewer on the hill road.
- Wear shoes with good grip. The steps near the pools are wet and polished.
- Carry water and sun protection. The climb back up is hot from late morning.
- Keep small notes for the car park attendant, a boat ride or a mint tea.
- Leave the falls by 3 p.m. in winter to drive the hill road in daylight.
- Combine with other trips on other days. Our guide to day trips from Marrakech by car compares Ouzoud with the Ourika Valley, Imlil and Agafay.
Which mistakes should you avoid at the Ouzoud Waterfalls?
The most common mistake is leaving Marrakech late and driving the hill road back after dark. The GOV.UK travel advice for Morocco warns that poor lighting makes night driving more dangerous. These are the other errors we see.
- Following unpaved shortcuts proposed by a map app.
- Feeding the macaques or leaving bags open near them.
- Walking down in sandals on wet, steep steps.
- Swimming near the base of the falls, where the current is strong.
- Overtaking on blind bends on the road after the turn-off.
- Leaving valuables visible in the parked car.
Prefer a shorter outing for your first drive? The Ourika Valley by car is closer and easier, with waterfalls at Setti Fatma.
