In short

The top things to do in Agadir by car are the Kasbah of Agadir Oufella viewpoint, the 10 km beach and the marina, the Souk El Had, the surf villages of Taghazout and Tamraght, Paradise Valley in the hills, and the Souss-Massa National Park about 70 km south. A car lets you combine two or three in a day.

Agadir is known for its long beach and its sunshine, but the most interesting things to do lie a short drive from the hotel zone: hilltop views, surf villages, palm gorges and a coastal national park. A car turns a beach holiday into a series of easy outings. We are Choumacars, a car rental agency based in Marrakech, open 24/7, and we deliver cars in Agadir within 24 hours, at Al Massira airport and in Taghazout and Tamraght. This guide lists these outings by car, with distances, estimated times, a suggested day plan, parking tips and the mistakes to avoid.

The Kasbah of Agadir Oufella

The kasbah was built in 1572 on the hill above the port, according to Wikipedia. It was destroyed by the earthquake of 29 February 1960, which nearly destroyed the city and killed an estimated 15,000 people. A restored wall remains, and the hilltop offers the widest view over the bay, the port and the modern city rebuilt after the disaster. Go late in the afternoon for the light.

The beach, the promenade and the marina

Wikipedia describes a seafront beach of more than 10 km. A promenade runs along it, lined with cafés and hotels, and leads to the marina, with its shops and restaurants next to the fishing and commercial port. It is the place for a walk at sunset and a fish dinner.

The Souk El Had

The Souk El Had is a huge walled market east of the centre, with thousands of stalls selling fruit, spices, argan oil, clothing and crafts. Park outside the walls and walk in. It is busiest at weekends.

Which day trips from Agadir work well by car?

The day trips from Agadir that work well by car are the surf coast to the north, Paradise Valley in the hills, and the Souss-Massa National Park to the south. Each fits into half a day or a full day with a return before dark.

Taghazout and Tamraght

Taghazout lies about 19 km north of Agadir on the coast road, according to Wikipedia, with Tamraght just before it. Both villages live around surfing, with cafés above the waves and beaches between the rocks. Our guide to Taghazout by car explains the drive and the parking.

Paradise Valley

Paradise Valley is a palm-lined gorge with rock pools in the hills inland from the coast north of Agadir, reached by a winding mountain road. Ask locally about the road and the water level before going, especially after rain.

Souss-Massa National Park

The Souss-Massa National Park lies about 70 km south of Agadir, near the Oued Massa and the fishing village of Tifnit, according to Wikipedia. It protects a stretch of coast, dunes and river mouth known for birdwatching. Respect the park rules and stay on authorised roads and tracks.

How do you plan a day out in Agadir by car, step by step?

You plan a day out by car by grouping places by direction: the surf coast in the morning, the city in the afternoon, the kasbah at sunset. Here is a plan with estimated times.

Which things to do in Agadir suit families?

The outings that suit families are the beach promenade, the marina, the view from Agadir Oufella, a calm morning on the beaches of Tamraght, and short walks in Paradise Valley with older children. The short driving distances make it easy to come back to the hotel for a rest.

  • Young children: the promenade and the beach in front of the city, which are flat and close to cafés.
  • Older children: a surf lesson in Tamraght or Taghazout with a local school, and the rock pools of Paradise Valley in spring.
  • Everyone: sunset from the kasbah hill, then dinner at the marina.

A family car with room for beach gear, such as the Hyundai Tucson, makes these outings easier. Keep water, hats and sun cream in the car, as the sun is strong on the coast even when the air feels cool.

Which car is right for Agadir?

The right car for Agadir is a compact car or saloon that is easy to park near the beach and the souk. All the roads in this guide are tarmac, so a 4×4 is only useful for some tracks in the hinterland, which we do not recommend with a rental car.

  • Renault Clio 5: compact and easy to park, with an automatic version. See the Renault Clio 5 page.
  • Dacia Logan: a simple manual saloon with room for four.
  • Hyundai Tucson: more space for a family and beach gear.

For rentals delivered on the coast, see our page on car rental in Agadir, and for a car waiting at the terminal, our page on car rental at Agadir airport.

Where do you park in Agadir?

In Agadir, you park in the guarded car parks near the beach, the marina and the souk, or at your hotel. Attendants in high-visibility vests manage most street parking in the centre and along the seafront.

Parking is easier than in Marrakech: the city was rebuilt after 1960 with wide avenues and car parks. Agree the arrangement with the attendant, lock the car and keep beach bags out of sight. At the Souk El Had, the car parks around the walls fill up at weekends; arrive in the morning or use a car park a little further away.

When is the right season for things to do in Agadir by car?

The right season for these outings is most of the year, thanks to the mild Atlantic climate. Spring and autumn suit outings inland, winter is the main surf season in Taghazout, and summer brings the busiest beaches.

  • Spring: mild, good for Paradise Valley and the national park.
  • Summer: warm and busy on the coast; morning fog is possible.
  • Autumn: warm sea, fewer crowds, surf season starting.
  • Winter: mild days, the main surf season, cool evenings.

What are the local tips for Agadir by car?

Our main local tip for Agadir is to drive north to the surf villages in the morning and come back before 5 p.m., when traffic builds up on the coast road through Anza and Aourir. A few more points from our team:

  • Keep small notes for parking attendants and roadside fruit stalls in Aourir.
  • Drive slowly in Tamraght and Taghazout, where surfers cross the road with boards.
  • Carry water and sun protection for Paradise Valley and the national park.
  • Never park on sand at the beaches outside the city.
  • Combine Agadir with Marrakech. Our guide to Marrakech to Agadir by car explains the motorway across the western High Atlas.

Which mistakes should you avoid when exploring Agadir by car?

The most common mistake in Agadir is spending the whole stay in the hotel zone and missing the coast and the hills a short drive away. The others are easy to avoid.

  • Taking a rental car onto sand or rough tracks to reach a remote beach.
  • Driving the mountain road to Paradise Valley after heavy rain.
  • Leaving bags visible in the car at the beach.
  • Speeding on the coast road, where police checks are frequent.
  • Driving back late at night on unlit roads. The GOV.UK travel advice for Morocco warns about poor lighting.
  • Entering protected areas of the national park off the authorised roads.
