In short
Ait Ben Haddou is about 171 km south-east of Marrakech by road, a drive of around 3 hours without stops via the N9 and the Tizi n’Tichka pass, then a short detour before Ouarzazate. The ksar is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1987. Park in the new village, cross the river on foot and stay one night nearby.
It is the fortified earthen village that many people picture when they think of southern Morocco: red clay houses climbing a hill above a river, crowned by an old granary, with the High Atlas behind. It is also one of the most filmed places in the country. We are Choumacars, a car rental agency in Marrakech open 24/7. This guide explains how to reach the ksar by car step by step, with estimated times, where to park, how to visit the ksar, the right car, local tips and the mistakes to avoid.
What is Ait Ben Haddou and why is it famous?
It is a ksar, a fortified village of earthen buildings, on a hill beside the Ounila river in the province of Ouarzazate. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987, as the Ksar of Ait-Ben-Haddou.
The village is a striking example of the earthen architecture of southern Morocco, with houses, collective buildings and defensive towers packed together on the slope. According to Wikipedia, the remains of a large fortified granary, an agadir, stand at the top of the hill. Most residents now live in a modern village across the river, and only a few families still live inside the ksar.
The ksar is also famous as a film location. Wikipedia lists productions such as Lawrence of Arabia, The Jewel of the Nile, Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven, and the site appeared in parts of Game of Thrones. Many visitors recognise the view of the ksar from the riverbank before they even arrive.

What is the route from Marrakech, step by step?
The route from Marrakech follows the N9 south-east over the Tizi n’Tichka, then a signed turn-off towards the ksar before Ouarzazate. Here is the drive in order, with estimated times from the Medina.
- Leave Marrakech on the N9 (0 to 20 min). Follow the signs for Ouarzazate. Leave before 8 a.m. to cross the pass in good light.
- Drive through Ait Ourir (about 40 min). A market town at the foot of the mountains. Slow down for pedestrians.
- Climb through the foothills (40 min to 1 h 45). River valleys, red earth villages and roadside cafés with viewpoints.
- Stop in Taddert (about 1 h 45). The last village before the steep section, a good place for a break.
- Cross the Tizi n’Tichka (about 2 h 15). Hairpins up to the pass. Use low gears, stay in your lane and overtake only with long, clear visibility.
- Descend towards the south (2 h 15 to 3 h 15). The landscape becomes dry and mineral, with kasbahs in the valleys.
- Take the turn-off for the ksar (about 3 h 15). It is signed on the left before Ouarzazate. Follow the road to the new village.
- Park in the new village (3 h 30 to 4 h). Leave the car in a car park near the river and continue on foot.
How do you visit the ksar on foot?
You visit the ksar on foot by crossing the Ounila river from the new village, then walking up the lanes of the old village to the granary at the top of the hill. Allow 1 hour 30 to 2 hours for a relaxed visit with photos.

- The crossing: Wikipedia notes that a pedestrian bridge completed in 2011 links the old ksar with the modern village. When the river is low, some visitors also cross on stepping stones.
- The lanes: narrow passages between earthen houses, with small shops and painters selling views of the ksar.
- The houses open to visitors: some families invite visitors inside to see the rooms and terraces of a traditional house.
- The granary at the top: the climb is steep but short, and the view over the valley, the river and the Atlas is the reason most people come.
Wear shoes with good grip, as some passages are uneven and sandy. In summer, avoid the climb in the middle of the day, when the heat reflects off the earth walls.
| Visit plan | Time on site | Light | Our view |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quick stop on the way to Ouarzazate | 1 h | Variable | Possible, but rushed |
| Late afternoon and sunset | 2 h | Warm light on the walls | The visit we recommend |
| Night nearby and early morning | 2 h | Soft light, few visitors | Ideal for photographers |
Where do you park at the ksar?
You park in the car parks of the new village on the near side of the river, close to the cafés and the path to the bridge. Attendants usually guide you to a space and watch the cars during the visit.
Agree the arrangement with the attendant when you arrive, lock the car and leave nothing visible on the seats. Do not park on the riverbank or on soft ground near the water. If you sleep in a guesthouse in the village, ask in advance where the car will stay for the night; many have their own enclosed parking.
Can you visit Ait Ben Haddou as a day trip from Marrakech?
You can visit it as a day trip from Marrakech, but it means 6 to 8 hours of mountain driving for 1 to 2 hours on site, with a high risk of crossing the Tizi n’Tichka on the way back in fading light. A night nearby is far safer and more enjoyable.
The usual plan is to leave Marrakech early, visit the ksar in the late afternoon light, sleep in a guesthouse in the new village or in Ouarzazate, and continue the next day towards the south or back to Marrakech in the morning. Our guide to Ouarzazate by car from Marrakech covers the town and the film studios nearby.
Which car is right for this drive?
The right car for the trip is a comfortable car with an automatic gearbox and enough power for the climbs of the Tizi n’Tichka. A 4×4 is not needed: the N9 and the road to the ksar are tarmac all the way.
- Hyundai Tucson: a two-wheel-drive SUV with an automatic gearbox and a high driving position, at ease on the pass. See the Hyundai Tucson page.
- Renault Arkana: a compact SUV with an automatic gearbox, comfortable for a couple.
- Volkswagen Touareg or Range Rover Sport: all-wheel drive for winter crossings of the pass. See our 4×4 rental in Marrakech.
An automatic gearbox makes the long climbs behind slow lorries far less tiring. Compare the models on our page on automatic car rental in Marrakech.
What can you combine with the ksar?
You can combine the ksar with Ouarzazate and its Taourirt Kasbah, the Telouet kasbah on a side road near the pass, and, on a longer trip, the Draa valley, the Dades gorges and the dunes of Merzouga. The ksar is a natural first stage of any southern road trip from Marrakech.

- Telouet: a former residence of the Glaoui family, reached by a narrower road that leaves the N9 after the pass.
- Ouarzazate: about half an hour further, with the Taourirt Kasbah and the film studios.
- The Draa valley: palm groves and kasbahs south of Ouarzazate, towards Agdz.
- Merzouga: the Erg Chebbi dunes, two more days of driving. See our guide to Merzouga by car from Marrakech.
What are our local tips for the ksar?
Our main local tip is to arrive in the late afternoon, when tour groups have left and the low sun turns the earth walls orange. Here is what our team tells guests before they go.
- Leave Marrakech early to cross the pass before the lorries.
- Fill up in Marrakech or Ait Ourir before the mountain section.
- Carry water and a warm layer. The pass is cold, the valley hot.
- Keep small notes for the car park attendant and the houses that welcome visitors.
- Agree on any guided visit beforehand. Guides at the entrance are optional; the lanes are easy to follow.
- Download offline maps. Mobile signal drops in the mountains.
Which mistakes should you avoid at the ksar?
The most common mistake is visiting at midday on a day trip and driving back over the pass in the evening. The GOV.UK travel advice for Morocco warns that mountain roads are hazardous in bad weather and that poor lighting makes night driving dangerous. Avoid these errors too:
- Parking on the riverbank, where the ground is soft and water can rise after storms.
- Climbing to the granary in sandals on sandy, uneven steps.
- Overtaking lorries on the hairpins of the Tizi n’Tichka.
- Following unpaved shortcuts proposed by a map app between the N9 and the ksar.
- Leaving bags visible in the parked car.
- Ignoring the winter forecast for the pass.
