In short

The Atlas Mountains start less than an hour south of Marrakech. By car, the easiest High Atlas routes are the Ourika Valley and Imlil, each about 75 to 90 minutes away on tarmac. Oukaimeden climbs higher, and the Tizi n’Tichka crosses the range towards Ouarzazate. Drive in daylight and check the weather in winter.

From the rooftops of Marrakech, the snowy line of the High Atlas fills the southern horizon for much of the year. Driving into them is one of the main reasons visitors rent a car here: valleys with Amazigh villages, mountain passes, waterfalls and walks towards the highest peak in North Africa. We are Choumacars, a car rental agency in Marrakech open 24/7. This guide explains which mountain routes work by car, with distances, estimated times, the villages worth seeing, the right car, safety on mountain roads and the mistakes to avoid.

What are the Atlas Mountains and where are they?

The Atlas Mountains are a range of about 2,500 km crossing Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, according to Wikipedia. Their highest peak, Jbel Toubkal, reaches 4,167 metres in the High Atlas, about 60 km south of Marrakech as the crow flies.

In Morocco, the chain is made of three main ranges. The High Atlas runs from the Atlantic coast to the Algerian border and contains several peaks above 4,000 metres, including Toubkal and Ighil M’Goun. The Middle Atlas, further north, rises to 3,340 metres at Jbel Bou Naceur and is known for its cedar forests. The Anti-Atlas, to the south-west, reaches 3,304 metres at Jbel Siroua. The mountains are mainly inhabited by Amazigh communities, whose villages of earth and stone cling to the slopes.

From Marrakech, the High Atlas is the range you will drive into. It is close enough for day trips, and high enough to have snow on the peaks from winter into spring.

Which routes into the Atlas Mountains can you drive from Marrakech?

The mountain routes that you can drive from Marrakech are the Ourika Valley, the road to Imlil via Asni, the climb to Oukaimeden, the Amizmiz road, the Tizi n’Tichka towards Ouarzazate and the Tizi n’Test towards Taroudant. The first three work as day trips; the passes are better as part of a longer trip.

Route From Marrakech Driving time each way (estimate) Road Format
Ourika Valley to Setti Fatma South-east About 1 h 30 Tarmac, valley bends Day trip
Imlil via Tahannaout and Asni South About 75 min Tarmac, mountain road after Asni Day trip
Oukaimeden South-east, via Aghbalou 1 h 30 to 2 h Steep mountain road Day trip
Amizmiz and the western foothills South-west About 1 h Tarmac Half day or day trip
Tizi n’Tichka to Ouarzazate South-east, N9 3 h 30 to Ouarzazate Mountain pass, tarmac One night or more
Tizi n’Test to Taroudant South, via Asni and Ijoukak A long day Narrow, winding pass Experienced drivers, one night

Times are estimates for good weather. Mountain roads are slower than they look on a map, and roadworks, snow or storms can add a lot of time.

What is the easiest Atlas Mountains drive from Marrakech?

The easiest mountain drive from Marrakech is the Ourika Valley, a paved road that follows the river from Tnine Ourika to Setti Fatma, around 62 to 65 km from the city, without any pass to cross. It is the route we recommend for a first day in the mountains.

Riverside restaurants line the valley, and a path from Setti Fatma climbs to a series of waterfalls. At weekends, families from Marrakech come for lunch by the water, so leave early. Our guide to the Ourika Valley by car describes each stop and the safety rules when summer storms hit the mountains.

How do you drive to Imlil and the foot of Toubkal, step by step?

You drive to Imlil by heading south from Marrakech on the R203 through Tahannaout and the Moulay Brahim gorge to Asni, then turning left for the last 17 km up to the village. Here is the route with estimated times from the Medina.

  1. Leave Marrakech to the south (0 to 20 min). Follow the signs for Asni and Tahannaout.
  2. Cross the plain to Tahannaout (20 to 30 min). A straight road with villages and roundabouts.
  3. Drive through the Moulay Brahim gorge (30 to 45 min). The first real mountain section, with bends above the river.
  4. Reach Asni (about 45 min). A market town with a large weekly souk. Turn left for Imlil.
  5. Climb to Imlil (45 to 75 min). A narrower road with hairpins, walnut trees and views of the peaks.
  6. Park in Imlil (about 75 min). Leave the car in the village car parks and continue on foot.

Imlil is the usual starting point for walks towards Toubkal. A local guide is useful for any long hike. Our guide to Imlil by car from Marrakech covers parking and the road in detail.

Which Atlas Mountains passes can you cross by car?

The passes you can cross by car from Marrakech are the Tizi n’Tichka on the N9 towards Ouarzazate and the Tizi n’Test towards Taroudant. Both are tarmac, but they are long mountain roads that need daylight, patience and a good look at the weather.

Tizi n’Tichka

The Tizi n’Tichka is the main road across the High Atlas, built in 1936 along an old caravan route. A sign at the top shows 2,260 metres, while a 2022 measurement puts it at about 2,205 metres. The road has been widened on many sections and carries cars, coaches and lorries every day. Our guide to Ouarzazate by car from Marrakech describes the crossing step by step.

Tizi n’Test

The Tizi n’Test continues south from Asni past Ijoukak to the Souss plain and Taroudant. It is narrower and more exposed than the Tichka, with long sections of hairpins and fewer places to pass. It suits confident drivers with a full day ahead, never as a late afternoon shortcut.

Which car is right for the Atlas Mountains?

The right car for the mountains is a car with an automatic gearbox and enough power for long climbs. From spring to autumn, a two-wheel-drive SUV or a compact car is enough on the tarmac roads. In winter, choose all-wheel drive for snow and ice on the high roads.

  • Volkswagen Touareg or Range Rover Sport: all-wheel drive for Oukaimeden and the passes in winter. See the Volkswagen Touareg page and our 4×4 rental in Marrakech.
  • Hyundai Tucson: a two-wheel-drive SUV with a high driving position, comfortable on the Tichka and in the valleys.
  • Renault Clio 5 or Hyundai Grand i10: light and easy to park in Imlil or Setti Fatma, for couples in dry weather.

On mountain roads with hairpins and slow lorries, an automatic gearbox is far less tiring than a manual clutch. Compare the models on our page on automatic car rental in Marrakech.

How do you drive safely on mountain roads?

You drive safely on mountain roads by going slowly in bends, using engine braking on descents, overtaking only with long clear visibility and finishing every mountain section before dark. The GOV.UK travel advice for Morocco notes that mountain roads become especially hazardous in bad weather.

  • Use low gears on long descents instead of holding the brakes.
  • Sound the horn lightly before blind hairpins on narrow roads, as local drivers do.
  • Give way to lorries and buses on narrow sections, where they need the whole road.
  • Stop only in lay-bys and villages, never on a bend for a photo.
  • Watch for falling stones after rain, and for animals and children near villages.
  • Keep warm clothes and water in the car, whatever the temperature in Marrakech.

When is the right season to drive in the Atlas Mountains?

The right season to drive in the mountains is spring and autumn, when roads are clear, valleys are green or golden and temperatures are comfortable. Summer is pleasant in the high valleys but brings afternoon storms; winter brings snow on the peaks and sometimes on the passes.

Season Valleys (Ourika, Imlil) Passes and Oukaimeden Our advice
Spring (March to May) Green, strong waterfalls Snow possible early in the season Ideal period
Summer (June to September) Cooler than Marrakech, busy at weekends Clear, afternoon storms Leave early, return by mid-afternoon
Autumn (October to November) Quiet, golden light Usually clear, first snow late in the season Ideal period
Winter (December to February) Fresh, short days Snow and ice likely All-wheel drive, check conditions

Can you spend a night in the Atlas Mountains with a rental car?

Yes, you can spend a night in the mountains with a rental car, and it is often the most relaxed way to enjoy them. Guesthouses in Imlil, the Ourika Valley and along the Tizi n’Tichka let you walk at sunset and at dawn, when the light on the peaks is at its finest.

Ask your guesthouse where to leave the car, since many mountain houses are reached by a short path from the road. Arrive in daylight, keep warm clothes in your bag, as nights are cold even in late spring, and plan the drive back for the late morning, when the roads are dry and the light is good. A night in the mountains also turns the Tizi n’Tichka crossing into two easy stages instead of one long day.

What are the local tips for the Atlas Mountains by car?

Our main local tip is to choose one valley per day and to leave Marrakech before 8 a.m., so that you have time to walk and still drive back in daylight. Here is what our team tells guests.

  • Fill up before leaving Marrakech. Stations are scarce in the high valleys.
  • Download offline maps. Signal drops in deep valleys.
  • Visit the Asni souk on its market day if you drive to Imlil.
  • Hire a local guide for any walk longer than a short stroll.
  • Carry small notes for car park attendants and mint tea in the villages.
  • Plan the other trips too. Our guide to day trips from Marrakech by car compares the mountain routes with Agafay, Ouzoud and Essaouira.

Which mistakes should you avoid in the Atlas Mountains?

The most common mistake in the mountains is starting a mountain drive late and finishing it in the dark. The others are just as easy to avoid with a little planning.

  • Trying to link two valleys in one day, such as Ourika and Imlil.
  • Ignoring the winter forecast for Oukaimeden or the passes.
  • Parking on riverbanks in summer, when storms can raise the water quickly.
  • Following unpaved shortcuts proposed by map apps.
  • Taking the Tizi n’Test as a quick route late in the day.
  • Hiking towards Toubkal without a guide or the right equipment.
